Kicking Butt and Cleaning Up at the PR property

Well…It has been the most productive time I have had at the property in Rincon so far (but we’ve had some fun too).   We got the yard mowed with the modded trimmer.  I spent my morning finishing up the backyard trimming.  Then Matt and I moved on to cleaning the roof and prepping it for cross coat sealant.

Very productive day and my arms are very sore.  So we went to the beach and are now just hanging out on the roof of the cabana.  Which we decided may need a view improvement by way of chainsaw (more on that later…hopefully).

I also checked on a Pineapple Mango tree we planted a while ago as well as a Corazon tree.  Pics below.

Lots of Growth Since the Last Visit

We planted about 10 Mexicola Avocado seeds last visit.  And three of them sprouted while we were away!

Avocado trees were marked by a cinder block so we could find them after a year away

corezone
Corazon Tree, it is doing very good and way bigger than when we planted it!!

The next step was to start on the roof.  Matt started early so I don’t have a before picture but the alge was about 1/4 inch thick!!  It was basically green /black when we started and now it is white.  There were a few plugged drains and on one of them I used a vine as a snake to clear the clog!  LOL

Super clean results! Almost ready for the sealant

Matt was looking for something to clear the drain.  He mentioned that we should Macgyver it.  So I used some jungle resources to make a sewer snake and put it up the drain.

There has been so much going on it is hard to post it all!  Here is a picture of how the yard looked from the front before we started.  There was quite a bit of growth.

San Sebastian Market

I was looking through some old videos of Puerto Rico and found this one of the Pulguero or Flea Market in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico when we were there in 2009 (you can read about this trip here if you missed it). It is one of the larger weekend markets with quite the exotic and eclectic assortment of items. We can’t wait to go back to Puerto Rico; it has been too long!

Surprises from the Greenhouse

It’s getting to be that time once again where we need to move all the happy tropical plants from the humid, wet and hot greenhouse back inside for the winter. Tropical plants can’t live below about 40 degrees F, and so we have to bring them in to the climate-controlled fake tropical space we create around here in our house for the winter.

When Britton started taking the citrus, pomegranates and pineapple plants in he also brought in the coffee tree. To our surprise, the little red berries had lost their skin and fruit pulp and so the bean seed started sprouting! (We saw the rolly-pollies at work on the red fruit pulp earlier.) So cool!

The coffee bean sprouts are awesome!

We went to the store and found the perfect pot for the coffee sprouts!

After moving out the potted plants, he was also able to get a little deeper into the greenhouse and found all these cucumbers! Surprise! Guess what we will be eating for snack for the next week!

A sink full of huge cucumbers

If the greenhouse is any indication of what we’ll get in Puerto Rico (which I think it is because of it’s consistent humidity and water) then we will be in for some fantastic gardening!
