Puerto Rico Property Contract Negotiations

Well we have a price pinned down on the property in Puerto Rico. That was part 1. Now we are going back and forth on a closing date. Contract negotiations are sometimes hard to come to an agreement on.

I figured we would come up against a barrier here as I had initally put out a closing date of June 15th. Admittedly that is pretty far out. They’ve come back and said they’d only be willing to go 90 days which puts us in March. By my calculations we might be able to swing April without having to get too creative.

We still need to aquire the assitance of a lawyer to check out all the paperwork and details that Cassie and I don’t have the abilty to look at. This coupled with our jobs as well as getting all our finances in order will mean we have to come back with a date further out.

We say June 15th they say March maybe we can see if they’ll do May. Or we can go back to closer to our initial price that we offered and do it closer to their time frame…the choice is between time or money. Give us more time, we’ll give them more money. Less time, less money.

We also kind of feel like the real estate agent isn’t doing us too many favors. I think we can make this work, but we might have to talk to the owners directly to make something that works for all of us. The agent seems to like being in the position of keeping us in the dark.

Offered

Well I spoke to one of the real estate agents I had been working with in Puerto Rico. I let her know how much we were willing to offer on the property. She said she would let me know.

Of course she also mentioned that someone else was looking at the property. You can’t let that kind of stuff affect you though. If they are, fine. She might also just be telling me that to scare me. The bottom line is…I have to be comfortable with it.

I thought about going full price but I just don’t think that it is worth that much. Gut feeling kind of thing.

So now I will wait. Just wanted to give an update!

BK @ BK (Burger King in Puerto Rico)

Well I have had another day of looking at properties here in Puerto Rico.  This time it was focused in Rincon.  Something I found kind of surprising was that all the coffee shops are closed.  Well, Surfs Up Coffee in Rincon was technically open there was no internet access and no coffee.  I stopped in and it was pretty empty.  I talked to the owner (Johnny Coffee as I’ve heard the surfers call him).  He talked to me for 45 minutes and never asked me if I wanted something to drink…lol.

Anyhow he did give me some good info.  This Puerto Rican Burger King has wifi.  I forgot my wallet in San German this morning and had all of $5 in quarters on me.  I bought 3 cheese burgers (Cassie would approve) and figured I’d make good use of the internets.  It seems to work well here.

So I checked some things out and have a few pictures to upload.  I am feeling positive today about a few of these.   I had talked to Jeff and Katrina last night about their experience moving here and their thoughts on what Cassie and I are doing.  It was a very good discussion and I appreciate all the advice.  It is a tough decision on what path to follow and how to follow it.  It is different for everyone.  I have a different idea than Cassie and I think that would be true for most couples.

Being here again reminds me of how fricken warm it is.  I was told by locals that it had been days of rain previous to me getting here but I’ll take that over snow at this point.   It has been an emotional trip for me especially without Cassie by my side.  It has given me some clarity to my own thoughts however.  I am a little homesick at times (even after a few days!) but overall I do want to move to Puerto Rico.  I don’t know if renting is the best idea, a large house in Rincon or a small house in the country.  I hope that Cassie and I can come to some kind of decision and if not, we have time still!  It has to be right for both of us.  If it isn’t….we will wait until it is.  The important thing is to never give up.  If you give up, then you’re done.   I won’t let that happen.

Status Update from Puerto Rico

Well I have been driving around all day and met with a few realitors. The good news is that I found everything. GPS is pretty slick and this is the first time I’ve had it. Takes the guess work out of driving around.

The first place I looked at was about what I expected. 11 acres and a house. The house is in pretty good shape and doesn’t look to need any major repairs. The land is more usable than some I’ve seen. There are a few flat spots that you could either build more houses on or could be used for gardening.

The second place was in Rincon. It sits on 4 acres and has 2 houses. The larger one is made out of wood and the small guest house is made from concrete. THe larger wood house has a ‘beach house’ kind of feel to it. It is somewhat concerning because in the tropics wood doesn’t last very long from what I’ve been told. It makes sense. Concrete would seem to stand up to the elements a lot better than a piece of wood that is subject to insects and moisture.

I’ve got a few more places to look at tomorrow, then my flight leaves (very late at night).

It’s been hard to find internet which seems to always happen to me when I am here. The coffee shops were closed and the only place with free wifi was Burger King. I didn’t really want to stop there so I just came back to home base and Katrina let me use their internet.

I just wanted to log in and upload some photos. I should elaborate more on thoughts later on when I have time/energy.
