Kicking Butt and Cleaning Up at the PR property

Well…It has been the most productive time I have had at the property in Rincon so far (but we’ve had some fun too).   We got the yard mowed with the modded trimmer.  I spent my morning finishing up the backyard trimming.  Then Matt and I moved on to cleaning the roof and prepping it for cross coat sealant.

Very productive day and my arms are very sore.  So we went to the beach and are now just hanging out on the roof of the cabana.  Which we decided may need a view improvement by way of chainsaw (more on that later…hopefully).

I also checked on a Pineapple Mango tree we planted a while ago as well as a Corazon tree.  Pics below.

Lots of Growth Since the Last Visit

We planted about 10 Mexicola Avocado seeds last visit.  And three of them sprouted while we were away!

Avocado trees were marked by a cinder block so we could find them after a year away

Corazon Tree, it is doing very good and way bigger than when we planted it!!

The next step was to start on the roof.  Matt started early so I don’t have a before picture but the alge was about 1/4 inch thick!!  It was basically green /black when we started and now it is white.  There were a few plugged drains and on one of them I used a vine as a snake to clear the clog!  LOL

Super clean results! Almost ready for the sealant

Matt was looking for something to clear the drain.  He mentioned that we should Macgyver it.  So I used some jungle resources to make a sewer snake and put it up the drain.

There has been so much going on it is hard to post it all!  Here is a picture of how the yard looked from the front before we started.  There was quite a bit of growth.

Fridge in the Backseat, Toilet in the Trunk

Well today we (Matt & I) woke up early (~8am PR time).  Matt went for a run down by the beach and I got some things together (gas can) for our trip to Home Depot in Mayaguez.

We picked up a few things…..

Matt with car Fridge Stuffed in Car car3new trimmer head

Everything fit in the rental car, but JUST BARELY.  I mean we couldn’t have planned it any better.   When we got back to the house we went to work.  We put the new fridge in (easy), put the new Toilet in (not as easy) then proceeded to mow a 1/2 acre of 4 foot tall jungle (not easy at all).

It is fun how sometimes things just work out, and everything we bought…Amazingly fit .  There wasn’t much room to spare.  It was awesome.

New Fridge (a little smaller due to car size)

The new trimmer head with the blades works out much better than the old line feed one.  It makes it much easier to mow things down, but it’s still pretty sold growth.  I’d say going a year between mowing is a bit too long.   Some of the small trees are fairly thick already.   I did also pick up some heavy duty “loppers”.  The front is now clear of vines and trees and I expect to finish up the back yard sometime soon.

We also picked up the cross coat stuff from Home Depot and some brushes to attack and clean the roof.  We will start the cleaning process maybe tomorrow and finish up sealing things up.  Crosscoat is expensive.  It was $125 for a 5 gallon bucket, but I suppose for a roof that isn’t too bad.

You can see our Econo food on the counter and on top of the min fridge in the last picture.

Afterward we went to Tamboo and I bought Matt dinner.

It has been a lot of fun to show Matt around.  Stay tuned for more!!

I Have Arrived in Rincon!

After a long day of flying and leaving Denver at a brisk -6 degrees F my friend Matt and I have arrived at the property.  We flew to Philadelphia and on to San Juan with the weather getting warmer each stop and arriving at a nice 80 degree evening.

The luggage I lovingly call Big Red arrived in one piece as our first moving bag

We figured we would get into Rincon eariler even with the drive instead of flying to Aguadilla, and we did, arriving in Rincon about 10ish.

When we got into Rincon the gate and everything around it was covered in new growth.  It will take some time to cut it back.  I am planning to hit up Home Depot in the morning to get some supplies.

I will post more pics in the morning.  It has been a long day and I am posting this from my phone.

Our First Moving Bag to Puerto Rico

Since Britton is going down to Rincon in a little more than a week for  a short trip to check on the property, get a little work done and help our friend in his search for a Puerto Rican property, we thought we should take advantage of this trip to send some of our stuff with him.

So we went down to the Arc, a local Greeley second hand thrift store, to look for a suitcase that we could fill up and then just leave there AKA our first moving bag to Puerto Rico.

Suitcase
We found this suitcase (now filled and ready for PR) for $1.25!

It was a little hard to decide what to put in the suitcase because, after all, we still need to live here for another 9 or 10 months. But we filled it with stuff that we thought would be handy there and that we could live without here (and that weren’t really that exciting for possible thieves). For instance, our juicer, waffle maker, some glasses, some plates, our fish platter, an extension cord, hammer and screw driver and a few knick knacks.

Britton really just wants to start out fresh down there and buy everything, but I reasoned with him that for everything that we bring and don’t have to replace at retail price we will save a lot of money. One checked $25 bag full of $200 worth of stuff saves us $175 in replacement cost. Plus, shipping 50 lbs of stuff via mail would be a lot more than $25.

So if you see someone sporting this exciting and fashionable 1980s brown luggage with a red racing stripe, you can say ‘hi’ to Britton. ha!

Also, while we were at the Arc he also just happened to spy this pair of Doc Martins, that fit him, for just $8! Awesome deal and he loves them!
