Flowers and Feathers

Today I woke up and saw what looked like a torn up plastic bag in the back yard.  I put my shoes on for a closer inspection.  Turned out to be white feathers!   A quick chicken count..1..2..3..4…..5…5….5…….Uht oh.  There should be 6.

Omeleto, Omeleto, where have you gone?
Morning is here and the new day is on!

I looked around a bit to see if perhaps little Omletto could be found.  It appears that whatever got her, took her over the fence and across the field. I didn’t find anything but a trail of feathers.  I followed the trail and didn’t find anything.

Omeleto, Omeleto you were here last night.
Nothing but feathers by the greenhouse in light.

I left you with the others but didn’t shut the lock.
Now you are gone and not left with the flock.

Omeleto

This is not the first time we have had a hen house attack, but it is the first time we actually lost a bird. 🙁

White Snow on Green Grass

The snow has continued with a huge storm this week that dropped nearly a foot of snow. The general rule of thumb in this area of Colorado is to begin turning on the sprinklers for your grass around April 15 and shut it off on October 15. But not this April 15. This week was a strange one. I think even the chickens were confused!

Hey, let us in! It looks much warmer in there

Green grass and snow
Well at least the grass looks nice and green with all this moisture!

Colorado’s Bipolar Weather

Colorado is rather bipolar when it comes to weather. Yesterday, for instance, it was sunny and 73 degrees. Today, my work closed due to blizzard conditions with a high below freezing in April! Or put more simply in pictures of our Greeley backyard with the chickens:

Yesterday

Chickens scratching, taking dirt baths, tulips growing, yard greening, Kitty hanging out.

Today:
Avoiding the snow standing on one leg, feeling “cooped up”, snowy windblown eggs,  peeking out the door of the coop.

Glorious Autumn Days and Chickens

I am not a big fan of the weather turning colder, but one thing that is absolutely stunning for about 2 weeks here in Colorado are the changing colors of the trees. Many people will head up to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park solely to see the aspens turn to a bright yellow. Here in our own yard, we’ve had a pretty spectacular display in our trees as well. I managed to capture this shot of the chickens and the changing leaves of the paper birch tree without even knowing I had. I put the camera on the ground facing up and snapped. I think it turned out rather lovely.

It’s definitely one of the better pictures of the chickens, you can really see the detail

And here’s a shot of the crabapple tree in the bright sunlight
