The Time of Slugs and Siestas

I love this time of year, when it gets more and more reliably warm. The plants are happy, the animals are happy, and we are happier too! We’ve been enjoying our daily salads straight from our greenhouse and garden. There is so much lettuce: salad bowl lettuce, red and green leaf romaine, spinach, bibb and more that we’ve even been giving some away. We also have been eating radishes and I ate my first greenhouse strawberry of the season today at lunch.

The other day Britton went out to gather the goods for a salad and we had a few uninvited guests to our salad lunch. Slugs! They were small, but nonetheless were enjoying our leafy greens. We picked through it and checked each piece and came up with about 4 slugs. Luckily we have slug-o-matics called chickens who devoured them in a snap.

Then, of course, after a good meal, everyone wants to take a nap. So it was siesta time. I wish I could take a siesta every day!

Omelette’s Got No Toe

I noticed our chicken Omelette had a missing toe the other day -or at least half of it was missing. It was bleeding and she was limping a little. She is the really sketchy chicken. We got her as an adult chicken and so she wasn’t hand-raised like all the other ones. Plus Leghorns are known for being a little more skittish than some of the other breeds. Because of this, I couldn’t treat it or wash it out or anything. Anyhow, I managed to snap a few photos of her foot with the missing toe. I think her toenails must just be too long and she got it snagged on something. It looks like she is doing ok now though even without any of our help…

Rainy Day Animals

The weather has been really WET here lately. And that’s unusual. We even got a little snow but it didn’t stick. I was surprised to see the chickens out cavorting in the rain instead of huddled in their coop like I wanted to be (in my bed, that is). But I did snap a few funny pictures of the wet menagerie. I was worried about the chickens being all wet, but from everything I’ve read, they are fine as long as they can get out of it if they want to.

Silly Schnoodle and Chickens Too

Our dog Schnoodle is so old she doesn’t know what’s up. She can barely see, has very few teeth, can’t hear unless we clap and is slowing down a bit. But she does love to eat and her nose knows. However, she doesn’t rightly know what’s going on right on her back. So we played a little game of feed the chickens from the back of Schnoodle. It was pretty funny. Have a look. As for Kitty, he’s too sophisticated to join in on the fun. 🙂
