I Love Summertime!

Summertime in Colorado is the best. It is warm, everyone is outside enjoying the weather, and the days are much longer. There are bbq’s and get togethers, concerts, bike riding, gardening. Everything is green and flowering. The chickens are laying lots of eggs. Everything is alive! It reminds me a lot of how Puerto Rico is every day.

We eat lots of fresh food like strawberries and lettuce from the garden

We go to concerts: Britton in downtown Greeley at the Blues Jam

Cassie outside the gates to Greeley

We ride our bikes everywhere

Chickens give us lots of food: Henrietta on an egg

Hooray for summer!

Getting Ready to Go to Puerto Rico!

Well we are within a week of our departure. We are getting everything taken care of that we need to so we can be gone for a few weeks in Puerto Rico!

We need to pack for swimming, caving, house closing, hanging out, hiking our 4 acres, going out to restaurants, repairing / fixing the house, rain, sun and of course the unknown of which there are many in Puerto Rico.

We need to make sure our animals are taken care of. In preparation for this we got a mega feeder and a mega waterer for the chickens (all 6 now).

5 gallons of water                                                15lbs of feed

We figure that should make it easier for us to take care of them all the time, and pretty easy for someone to chicken sit while we are away (hey, free eggs! Thanks Charlotte).

We’ve been listening to more reggae lately, I guess it’s part of the whole tropical theme..lol.  I am not much for reggaeton scene yet, but some of it I do like.  We also really enjoy old salsa music (oye Hector!).

It’s coming up quick! In less than one week, we’ll be in Puerto Rico ready to close on our house!

Out and About

The baby chicks aren’t really babies anymore and really don’t belong in a (human) house all day long. So, we’ve been letting them spend most days in the greenhouse when we are at work and then we take them in at night since it can still be down in the high 30s at night

.

This weekend, though, it was such a nice day that we decided to let them out in the main yard. We weren’t sure how the big chickens would treat them, and I was (am) a little overprotective of them. They are still only about 5 weeks old. But they are looking little miniature chickens now already! They grow so fast!

The chickens were much more interested in their food than they were in the chicks themselves. It does look as though we have one that will be competing with Henrietta as the top chicken. She is the barred rock (black and white one) in the video. She is still being told who’s the boss of the yard, but it will be interesting to see how that pans out as she gets bigger.

Also, here are a few pictures from around the yard. This weekend we finally got some nice weather -it has been so windy for all of April.

I think these are called grape hyacinths

The tulips have been blooming for about a month!

So have the dandelions

Fun with Spring Chicks

The chicks are now about 3 weeks old and getting big fast. They are outgrowing the box but we haven’t found a bigger one yet. So, instead we’ve been taking them into the greenhouse each day so they can run around in the seedlings and new plants and under our watchful eye.

Smile!

Hiding out in the cinder block

They are so funny how they flap around, peck and Britton said he even saw them dust bathing! We also found that they scurry around and hide if I talk in a high voice as you can see in this video. They must think it’s a hawk or something. The black one doesn’t care as much. Everyone wanted in the greenhouse to see what was going on-Kitty, Schnoodle and the big chickens. The only one we trust completely with them at this age is Schnoodle. She could care less about them.
