Finishing the Foundation (and Some Fun)

This week went by pretty fast because we had all of our days filled up. The guys worked four days out of five finishing up the columns -building the molds, mixing concrete, etc- and the one day that they didn’t, Britton and I spent about 10 hours shoveling and then carrying buckets of rocks up and down the quebrada like the sorcerer’s apprentice in Fantasia. We were joking that this is by far the best exercise regimen you could come up with! Cardio, strength training and repetition. We were super sore (especially my shoulders), but the next day was more work.

Britton and I literally moved tons of rocks to this site

They mixed all the concrete and then had to load it into buckets and into a wheelbarrow. One person “drove” the wheelbarrow and the other one or two acted as the horses and in that way they hauled the super heavy wet concrete to the columns.

The hard work wasn’t over at the site either. At this point they had to lift each super heavy bucket of liquid concrete mix in the air where it was then lifted by the guy on the ladder and then dumped into each column form.

By the time the weekend came, we were ready for a break from the work. This weekend is the annual Corona Pro Surf competition and like the one we went to last year, it brought quite the crowd into Rincón. On Saturday night we went out to the bar Calypso because a great reggae band called the Predator Dub Assassins was playing and we had a blast.

We used to listen to them some when we were preparing for our move here to get psyched up, so it was cool to see them in person. Plus one of our friends was playing in the band with them!

This video was filmed here in Rincón

And finally, today we enjoyed a beautiful beach day down at the marina with friends.

Lots of work, and lots of play, too.

Use Your Outside Voice

You know when you were a kid running around like crazy and getting into all kinds of adventures (aka trouble) and making lots of noise and laughing a lot?

Justin and Me
My brother and I as kids

Then, some adult, usually your parent or teacher would say, “Calm down and use your inside voice”.

And then, slowly and strangely, somewhere down the line, we become the adult?

Yah, well, sorry but we’re changing back. Britton and I have had a complete revolution from our life as adults and are turning back into kids again. It wasn’t exactly a calculated decision. It just sort of happened. Kind of like becoming adults. We have just sort of become kids again.

We spend so much time now just living and playing and laughing at all our mistakes and the strangeness of life again that it was bound to happen. We are outdoors so much more and are doing so many things that kids would do, we sometimes have to remind ourselves that there are still people who have to wake up at a prescribed time, stay in the lines, keep doors shut, wear clothes (or shoes), have schedules and clocks, and act “normal”.

We don’t anymore.

We now have extra time for whatever. The first things that start to come back when you return to being a kid again are creative pursuits like art, music and games.

I have heard that a good guide for where you should orient yourself in setting your life’s path/purpose  is to ask yourself what you loved to do as a kid. A kid of around 10-12, when you knew a little bit about your choices and preferences, but you still just knew how to have fun and not take things so seriously. Give it a try and see what you come up with and how it aligns with your life now.

When I was a kid I LOVED summertime, swimming and animals. If I could have designed my life when I was about 10 years old it would have been a constant summer of swimming, playing with friends, reading, drawing, learning new things and having lots and lots of animals.

Now: Lotsa turkeys!

When Britton was a kid he had a BB gun, went swimming daily in the summers, messed around with technical gadgets, played guitar and bass, played outside with friends and enjoyed video games.

Sounds pretty close! We’ve added in a few other interests, but basically…our lives have come full circle back to being kids again. Kids with a few more responsibilities, but a kid’s life none-the-less.

Still, sometimes we get caught in our old, adult-like ways. For instance, talking at a relatively normal indoor  volume. When we are outside we are often busy with something: turkeys or chickens, pulling weeds, watering plants, sawing down trees, making trails, etc. And so if we talk normally to one another and are on two sides of the yard, we can’t hear each other and so we end up saying it multiple times. So now, we remind each other to “use your outside voice!”

Just today we took a long walk around the property. With four acres of jungle, this is not a quick or easy task. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to hike around and clear some trails.

We have many large mango trees all over the jungle and so we are going to call it mango tree trail.

Mango magic tree

It is pretty amazing, actually, that we haven’t even really seen half the property. But it makes it fun too…every kid loves doing some exploring. And we always find cool stuff.

It has been such a kick to be a kid in a grown-up’s body. Sure there are those pesky responsibilities that we didn’t have as kids, but there are also all those resources we didn’t have then too. And don’t forget the things that you wanted and weren’t allowed as kids, we now CAN have and do as adults. It’s the best of both worlds, really.

And I don’t mind saying that loudly.

Paddle Out Celebration of Life

Our new friend Tony Hicks recently died. We hadn’t known him long, but his spirit was vibrant and he was always supportive and positive. So it came as a shock to the community who knew him when we found out that he had had a heart attack while knee boarding and died shortly thereafter. Tony had written a book/ebook called the Pillars of Progress about achieving your highest potential and I truly believe he was living in his.

This weekend we went to a Paddle Out celebration of his life at Domes Beach in Rincón. Paddle out ceremonies are often done for surfers and other water sport enthusiasts like Tony. It was so beautiful and a great reflection of him and we are grateful to have known him. Please keep his wife and family in your thoughts.

It was one of the most beautiful send-offs I think I have ever been a part of and we will miss Tony greatly.

Halloween in Rincón Puerto Rico

This was our first Halloween spent in Puerto Rico and we had a great time.

We had heard the Halloween parties in Rincón were famous and that nearly everyone goes all out with costumes and such. On Saturday there were parties at Tamboo on Sandy Beach as well as at the Calypso at Maria’s Beach, but we heard that usually the biggest party is on Halloween night at Shipwreck down by the Marina. So we made plans to go there.

We thought we would make a little tribute to all our hives of bees in our house with me dressing as a bee and Britton as a beekeeper.

There were some great costumes and a lot of people did come out to Shipwreck. It was fun to people watch and do a little dancing. We are starting to know more and more people when we go out socially which makes it more fun too.

It was pretty loud and so we hung out a lot in the parking lot talking. Inside or outside the bar was essentially the same party spilling out. It was pretty cool. After a while we decided to go down to Lucky 13 bar where the scene was a little more relaxed. Overall it was a fun night!

Halloween in Puerto Rico is definitely different than in the U.S. mainland. There were virtually no trick-or-treaters except in planned areas. But on most streets and in the neighborhoods we didn’t see any kids. I think part of this is that the houses here pretty much all have gates, there are very few sidewalks for the kids to walk on, and you can’t just knock on the door or ring the bell. Also, I think it’s not a cultural norm in Puerto Rico to celebrate Halloween.

But we DID see something pretty funny and different:
