Bribery is the name of the game

Awilda called while we were watching the Veep debates last night which was fine with me because it turned out to be much more boring than I was hoping. She sounded just kind of lonely and talked with me in Spanish for about a half an hour. She is such a nice lady and it’s always good practice to speak Spanish. Puerto Rican Spanish is sometimes much different than Mexican Spanish which is what I know best.

Sounds like she is optimistic about this new friend she has there at the Dept of Natural Resources. She did say, however, that we need a “padrinaje” and that that would make it go much easier. I am not exactly sure what a “padrinaje” is but I think it is related to a “bribe” which I understand.  Padrino is like a sponsor, or someone who helps smooth the way with a little money…aka grease for the palms. Sounds like without this “padrinaje” things move slowly and it goes to the bottom of the pile of things to do whereas with a “padrinaje” they magically move to the top….

I know that bribery is at play everywhere, and not just Puerto Rico, but it’s interesting to think of it being so blatant and just the way of the land, the way things get done. Here, I think it is usually the top officials getting some type of perk or the connections that lead to something, but not with random people because that would make it obvious. I don’t know, what do you think?  Have you had to give out bribes just to get basic services? Britton and I were talking about it and if that is just the way it is, well, maybe we need to play their system, but we don’t even know how much this would be, or if there is any guarantee it would work. Also, doesn’t that just perpetuate the activity more? Or does the phrase “when in Rome, do as the Romans” fit better. Or how about the Spanish version, “A donde fueras, haz lo que vieras” which means literally, Wherever you go, do as you see. I think we will wait a while longer. If Awilda wants to be/do the padrinaje, she would know how to do it much better than we would!

La Isla Del Encanto

Yesterday I was really feeling yearnings for the enchanted isle of Puerto Rico; the tropical weather, the beaches, the palms, the fruits, the salsa music, everything, so I started doodling while I was on a conference call. I had just finished reading Telex From Cuba (a great book btw) and thought of all the Havana-style designs during the 50’s. I brought home one of my doodles and then proceded to paint a picture. It is really bright and colorful, and kind of fun. Hopefully we can hang it on our wall.

It was interesting because as I was longing for Puerto Rico and painting, Britton received a phone call from Awilda. She ran into someone at the Dept of Natural Resources who may be able to help. She said it is just a matter of doing the work. With an election season, and without greasing palms, it may take a while longer, though. Awilda had talked to my mom about my dad’s health situation and wants him to come down and get checked out by her son or daughter. Awilda’s family is one of most well known in the alternative medicine scene there in PR. It is very cool that we happened to meet her. I think there is definitely a reason for everything. Her son is a chiropractor and her daughter is a naturopathic doctor.
La isla del encanto lives up to its name, and I become more enchanted with it every day.

Song of the Day

We have been waiting for the property title to come thru. Waiting and waiting it feels like. I spoke to the lawyer yesterday and he said that the department of natural resources has a survey team scheduled to visit the property soon. They are going to verify the dimensions of the easment and river area. Once that has been verified (measure twice and cut once?) then the legal team at the department can sign off on the deed to the easement. It sounds like it is still months away at this point. We did however forward our case number on to someone that may be able to help? We shall see. This has given us an opportunity to save some more so that is always good.

So I decided to put a song of the day out for download because the lyrics remind me of our chance in Puerto Rico. It’s a radiohead song:

“In the deepest ocean
Bottom of the sea
Your eyes
They turn me
Why should I stay here?
Why should I stay?
I’d be crazy not to follow
Follow where you lead

Your eyes
They turn me
Turn me on to phantoms
I follow to the edge of the earth
And fall off
Everybody leaves
If they get the chance
And this is my chance”

Going Forward?

We MAY be going forward a little with the deal in PR. I searched for the Dept of Natural Resources on the Internet and found their main site, but I could not find a way to locate anyone (the ‘contact us’ form has a broken link), so I searched a little more and found a blog by a man who actually works there! I left him a comment on his blog that we were in need of help and a signature to get going on the process and he set about helping us! That is a start!

Apparently we need to send a letter to the San Juan office with the details and copies of deed, survey, blue prints, etc. All of which…we have none of.  So I emailed the request to Carlos, the lawyer, and then called Awilda, the current owner, to let her know the plan. She said she would call Carlos, and Britton will as well.

Awilda also said she talked with another lawyer and that lawyer will try and contact the Dept as well to see what is going on. I don’t even know what type of document it is that we are waiting on. Awilda seems to think the delay has to do with this being an election year, and therefore there is anxiety in who will be the new leader (governor, I assume?) Things work so differently there.  Hopefully this is a little nudge forward. We’ll see.
