May Means Mango

It has been mango madness at our house for the last two weeks or so. It started somewhat slowly with only one or two mangos falling on our roof but the beat has slowly progressed and is still rising to a crescendo. Living in this little cabana when the mangos fall is like living inside of a drum with the roof of the house as the drum head. Boom, boom, bada bada the mangos keep falling from the sky.

The mango tree is nice though because it keeps the cabana nice and cool. And who can complain, really, about free, delicious food falling down for you to eat!?

Some of the mangos are over-ripe or have bugs in them, so they go to the chickens. But many of them are beautiful and large mangos. We need to start finding more mango recipes because we just have SOOO many.

Not only do we have this large “common mango” but we think we have some other varieties that are just now blooming. We will see what kind they are soon. I actually really like the so-called common mango. Some people think they have too much fiber, but if you eat them at just their peak of ripeness they taste perfect to me!

In Rincón, May means mango in another way as well. It means man-go. The town has just cleared out of tourists. The roads are clear and easy to drive and the restaurants and shops are less crowded. It also means that many of the shops that cater to tourists are shutting down for the summer season. Some tourist-serving entities will wait out Man-go (people leaving) May and wait for the smaller wave of San Juaneros and other Puerto Rican tourists that come to the west on summer break.

I’ve never lived in a tourist-oriented town before, so this fluctuation of people has been an interesting aspect of living here. It makes getting to know people a little more difficult because you don’t know who will be around in a month or two. You quickly learn a person’s level of connection to the area. They may be cyclical like snow birds who stay all winter but leave around the end of March or April to return to where they really call “home” or they might be intermittent vacationers who have a place here but don’t stay for very long stretches at a time. Or they might simply be tourists or travelers or people with wanderlust who may be thinking about living here but are checking out other options.

There are year-rounders like us and most of the Puerto Rican population  in town and there are people who hope to be year-rounders but aren’t sure they can make it through this lull in people if they are dependent on tourists for income.  It has been a little hard to adjust to this varying flow of people because we have met some really cool people that we would really like to get to know better and spend more time with, but then they leave!

We are starting to see that everything here has a season in a different way than we experienced the seasons in Colorado. While there is no distinct change like snow or wind gusts and crispness to the air as there was in Colorado, there are seasons. Right now we are in the mango season and I think I kind of like it. Our town has become a quieter more intimate place. The permanent residents all have a sort of familiarity with each other. We all know and understand the excitement of the tourist season, but we can also sit back and take a deep breath during the time of the mango descent down mango alley and await the flamboyán trees fantastic show of colors. There is a calmness on the waters and in the town as the tourist frenzy cools and the air heats up. The rains have begun and things are turning green again. There is a change, though ever so slight. May means mango and that there is a new season underway.

Face to Face with a Hawk and Our Food

The other day we had a chicken escape from the coop.  We can’t catch 1 chicken easily at first.  It takes about 10-15 minutes for them to start to miss the flock at which point I can grab one of the other chickens to use as bait and then the escapee will just walk over to me and I can pick her up and put them both back.

We went up to the cabana for a while and I decided that I should go put the chicken away before we forget.  I walked down and as soon as I turned the corner I saw a huge hawk standing at about 2 and a half feet tall on the ground next to the coop.  It took my brain a few seconds to realize what was going on.  As I looked I saw that the hawk is probably the ugliest monster I’ve seen out here so far.  It was actually shocking at first and I think that is what took my brain the longest to react.  “What the hell is that?!?” On the ground they are not the soaring majestic creatures they are in the sky!

I finally figured out what was going on, that the hawk was on top of our stray chicken and was staring at me and giving me that “What are you going to do, human?” look. Well I grabbed the biggest rock I could find, threw it while yelling at the stupid thing.  I missed with the rock, and it tried to fly away with the chicken.  The chicken was too heavy and it fell into the brush.  I yelled for Cassie to come out and she showed up happy to see that I was ok, but she was confused as to what was going on.  I gave her a short version of the story “Hawk, big, I scared it, it flew away and dropped the chicken over here somewhere!!” she helped me to find the chick and when we found her she was still alive.

It didn”t take long to figure out that the chicken couldn’t walk.  She could move her neck and her legs, but sat mostly sideways and couldn’t stand up.  We have read that the hawks know how to paralyze their prey and it appears that is what it did to our chicken- or immobilized her at the least.

We waited a day and it just wasn’t doing any better.  She just layed there on her side and looked unhappy.  Not eating, not drinking.  I decided that rather than having it suffer and die in the house, it was an opportunity to learn how to butcher a chicken, something we haven’t done yet.  So I got my supplies ready, read up on how to butcher and skin a chicken and did the deed. We skinned her rather than pluck her because there is so little meat on a 8-9 week old chicken.

It was fairly easy to actually kill the chicken once it had been decided. The hardest part was that we didn’t actually want to cull her; we were caring for her and were hoping for her eggs! But we were doing it because it was necessary. We thanked the chicken for her life. There was very little blood and it was over very quickly. The skinning and removal of organs was very quick as well. Within 10 minutes after the first chop we were grilling the small amount of meat that resulted. Talk about fresh!

After we ate the little meat that there was we reflected on the entire event that had unfolded.  We, for the first time in a long time, came face to face with the fact that when we eat meat, we are eating a formerly living breathing creature. That life must eat life to live! The chickens, the hawks, us! We all are in a cycle of life and death. We also reflected that we are so far removed from that basic fact that it seemed so strange to kill and eat our own food -or even grow it for that matter.  Shouldn’t it be the other way around?  Shouldn’t it feel weird to NOT be connected to the food we eat?  The food that incorporates into our body and forms us? I have eaten a lot of chicken, but this was the first time I felt that I understood the emotion that is involved with taking a life to feed ourselves.  The chicken we buy in the stores is totally sanitized of life, even though it too is killed.

I can see why people raise factory chickens and buy butchered processed meat.  It’s easier.  It is easier to raise a chicken in a 100% controlled environment where hawks and predators cannot get them and the chicken itself can’t get away.  It is easier to not be faced with killing, with death.

In the factory model, part of the plan is to remove us from the killing.  Another part of the plan is to control the chickens’ environment as close to 100% as possible to avoid hawks, skunks, foxes and whatever else may want to kill and eat them from doing so.  It removes the emotion so that we can treat life like a sterile factory component instead of the full down and dirty details that make life, life.

I can’t treat chickens like that.  I can’t leave them cooped up all day, they LOVE to peck and forage in the dirt for their food. We only let them out when we can watch them and protect them from hawks until they get bigger, but occasionally they might escape like this unlucky chicken. And I suppose this means that a hawk or me, might catch and kill one of them from time to time.  So be it. The chickens live a life worth living and I have a meal worth eating that I appreciate so much more than those factory chicken meals.  I am glad that I was able to learn and prepare my own food and I am glad this chicken got to be outside often and forage for food and do what a chicken does.  We are learning a lot out here and are growing as people. As for the other chickens, our hope is that as they get bigger the hawks will leave them alone and the roosters will do a good job of protecting the flock. It is all a big learning curve.

It’s Growing Good Here!

Britton and I were talking the other day about seasons and how here in Puerto Rico most people just refer to the seasons as the dry season (or high season for tourists) which is the winter and the wet season (or low season) which is summer. But there does seem to be some sort of spring going on right now. I watch the weed seeds emerging and many of the trees are in bloom and setting out new growth.

I would say we planted our test gardens at the right time as they have really taken off. The light spectrum/photoperiod seems to be different here and things seem to flower earlier than they did in the long days of Colorado summers. Still, I think our gardens will produce a good amount of food.

And we have made a lot of progress in the clearing of the acreage below. It’s hard work clearing out overgrown land that has been taken over by trees and vines for the last 20 years. We finally have some room to move around a bit more. We will soon be planting more fruit trees just in time for the rainy weather to keep them hydrated so that we won’t have to water them by hand anymore.

Chicks in Tub and Lares Bee Festival

The chicks are growing fast. So fast, in fact, that by 10 days we knew they were outgrowing the plastic tub they were living in and were starting to stink up the cabana! So we prepared them for their move to the bathtub from the outdoor bathroom we had removed from the deck.

We made a couple of other minor changes as well. For instance, instead of continuing to buy pine wood shavings, we thought, why not just use grass from the property? We are also trying out a chicken bottle with a nipple (yes, a chicken nipple -haha) that our friend gave us. The chicks overall seem content in their new step 2 home.

The only major adjustment we had to make was that on the first night we moved them to the tub, we heard something outside. Britton went to check on it and found a rat trying to get at the chicks! So we fixed up the tub with boards, concrete blocks and a rat trap and haven’t had a problem since we instituted the Fort Knox solution at night. During the day nothing has tried to mess with them, so we leave it mostly open with just a few boards and the wire mesh.The main coop is starting to come together and we’ll post an update soon when we get more progress on it.

This weekend we also drove up to Lares for the Festival de la Abeja (thanks Adolfo for the tip). We hadn’t been to Lares since we nearly bought a place there, so it brought up a lot of fun memories. Lares is in the heart of the jungle mountains and is a pretty cool old city. It’s about a 45 minute to hour drive from Rincón.

The festival itself was pretty fun, though we were hoping for more bee information and bee-raising materials. There were mainly booths with exotic birds, plants and food vendors and also a live band. The theme of the event was: “Sin Abejas  No Hay Polinización y sin Polinización No Hay Alimentación” which means “Without bees there is no pollination and without pollination, there is no food”.

But since we were in town, we had to stop at the famous Heladería of Lares (ice cream shop) that includes many different ice cream flavors including even rice and beans! We weren’t quite up for that, and chose coffee and mango ice cream. It was a fun day trip.
