Puerto Rico: A Tropical Fruit Paradise

Puerto Rico has an ideal climate for growing tropical fruit. All of the tropical standards found in grocery stores can grow right here: pineapples, mangoes, bananas, avocados, and citrus. And of course there are all of the lesser known exotic fruits that are quite delicious but maybe not as suitable for long distance travel to stores all over the globe.

In our garden we have many different tropical fruits. Recently we harvested some mandarin oranges.

Puerto Rico has been hit with a variety of diseases that are harmful or deadly to citrus including citrus greening which is simply devastating to crops. When we began clearing we saw the remains of probably 5-6 other citrus trees, but these 3 mandarins were the only mature ones to survive. We have since then planted more citrus varieties (kumquats, Buddha’s hand, lemon and lime, orange, grapefruit, etc), but it will take a while until they are full-sized and producing fully. So far, it has been a little over a year in and we really haven’t lost any citrus trees, so we will continue doing what we’ve been doing.

The next thing we recently saw was a banana flower with little bitty bananas growing!

These banana flowers are so huge and beautiful. We have planted a large number of banana “hijos” or sprouts of various cultivars, but these ones over by the turkey coop really took off. We think this area may have slightly better soil than some of the other areas (and more fertilizer for sure). We are super excited to eat our own bananas from the land because bananas are something we eat every day.

We are also super excited to grow our own pineapples. We planted probably 20 pineapple tops, but we only have about 5 remaining. Most of them succumbed to root rot. We are trying a new technique and are hopeful that it works.

Gardening in February…never ceases to amaze and delight me.

Govardhan Gardens

Yesterday we visited Govardhan Gardens located between Mayaguez and Maricao. We were interested in this private fruit farm because the owner, Sadhu, has one of the largest exotic plant collections on the island. We have picked up quite a few exotics from a variety of nurseries around the island, but there were still some trees we had difficulty finding. We were excited to learn that Govardhan Gardens has pretty much any tropical fruit tree you can imagine!

We made arrangements with our friends Greg and Frances who were also interested in seeing his place. We took a tour of some of the property and visited his goats who were super cute!

In addition to fruit trees, Sadhu also prides himself on an extensive collection of rare and high quality bamboos. We are considering bamboo for a living fence along one edge of our property. But that will be another day.

We picked up a nice assortment. I would have bought more, but they are quite a bit more expensive than some other nurseries, so we just stuck with the ones we have been interested in for quite some time.  It is amazing how fast our property can just go through plants. To really give it a tropical lush garden feel, it must be packed! Which is fine with me as learning about and finding new, ever-more-exotic/rare plants is one of my favorite pastimes now.

Here’s what we came away with on this trip to Govardhan Gardens:

Nutmeg– Used to make the spices nutmeg and mace. I am interested in getting a full spice collection including black pepper, cinnamon varieties, vanilla (we are currently growing), cloves, cardamom, ginger, galangal, etc.
African Breadfruit – Like traditional breadfruit, it can be used as a starch and even ground into a flour to make bread.
Dwarf Acai (2) – We have been looking a long time for acai. I love plants that are both beautiful and useful. Acai is a great looking palm tree and the fruit is one of the highest in antioxidants.
Jaboticaba- Strange tree whose dark purple grape-like fruit grow on the trunk of the tree. It is used extensively in Brazil.
Triangle Palm -This is an ornamental tree that we had been wanting for a while. It grows in the shape of a triangle and is quite striking.
Lipstick Palm- This is also an ornamental palm tree whose shaft is red-colored.
Black Sapote- According to Sadhu, if you pick this fruit at just the right time it will taste like chocolate pudding. If you freeze it and then shave it into a bowl, it tastes just like chocolate ice cream. I am a huge fan of ice cream, so I had to have this one! 🙂

I have no doubt that we will be back at Govadhan Gardens again in the future. Sadhu was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and I look forward to learning even more from him as well.

A Beach Winter Solstice and Christmas

We are so happy to have moved to a tropical beach town. Nearly any event can be magnified into something magical when you put “beach” in front of it.

This last week we had the opportunity to enjoy a beach winter solstice party with some friends at Steps Beach. Missy is so creative and a great party planner.

Then we had a small ritual saying goodbye to the old (darkness) and welcoming the new (light). We brought the Swedish torches from some of the trees on our property that Ben had chainsawed as well as deviled eggs made with farm fresh avocado instead of mayonnaise.

As the evening darkened, we watched a small bonfire and played with sparklers. It was a great night! To read and see more pictures of the evening, see Missy’s post.

Then on Christmas, we went to the beach again! While I have heard great things about Puerto Rican lechón, I have not had any here before. Even in Colorado, it has been a long time since we’ve had a pig roast. But a pig roast on the beach on Christmas?! This was the best idea ever. The company was great, the pig was delicious, the drinks were flowing and the setting at Almendros Beach was superb!

We then spent the rest of the evening with some of our very favorite people who are just about as close to family as we have here. It was a fabulous Christmas.

Man we are blessed! Good friends, good food, good times. We even awoke Christmas morning to a few gifts! I looked out the window and saw this gorgeous rainbow appearing through a sunshower.

Turkey Gratitude

Raising turkeys is a little different from raising chickens. We raise the chickens principally for their eggs, but turkeys are mainly for meat and the pleasure of being around such fun animals. The joy we receive from these creatures surprised even us and so when it came time (Thanksgiving) to slaughter one, we wavered a bit. We had raised these birds from chicks (or poults) protecting them from all the various harms that could come to them, they have grown to trust us and love being around us. However, as meat eaters who routinely eat turkey meat, we knew that it was important to us to do this if only to truly understand the connection between animal and meal.

First we chose the bird. We picked one of the males as they are slightly bigger and they also have begun fighting amongst themselves. Of the twelve birds we raised into adulthood, they were evenly split 6/6 male and female. So it was necessary to also bring down the numbers of males before mating season begins and the hens start laying eggs. We are planning to facilitate broodiness and hatching the next generation.

We had gathered all the necessary equipment including knives, a long hose, bags to collect the feathers and a cooler full of ice to quickly cool it once it had been gutted.

There are many ways in which to do “the deed”. We chose to hang the bird upside down and slit the neck. The turkey became very calm upside down. We said a blessing and thank you for his life and his time on earth spent with us. We appreciated him for giving his life in order for him to further our life. Life feeds on life and this is no more clear than in the moment of death. It took a few deep breaths before Britton was able to kill him, but it went very quickly.

When the head was removed we both commenced the long process of de-feathering. We didn’t need a pot of hot water; nearly all the turkey feathers came out without much trouble.

Our friend Anthony came over and helped to gut the bird. Overall it was fairly straightforward. We cut an incision between the legs and pulled most of the organs out that way. It was interesting seeing what makes up an animal and how many of those same parts make up us as well.

Finally, we dropped off the bird with our chef friend Tommy. We had planned on sharing it with everyone at a Thanksgiving dinner where he is the chef (Rincon Beer Company) but there was a change in plans.

Tommy cooked the bird using some culinary techniques that I had never heard of before (like valentine) and stuffed it with a flavorful risotto. A few days after Thanksgiving, Britton and I shared a moment giving thanks in quiet reflection and gratitude for our lives and all that make them. We are thankful for all the moments that have led up to this one. We are thankful for so much. And right at the moment of our first delicious bite we felt the completeness of what it meant to be truly thankful for our food and all the steps and people involved in bringing fullness to our lives and bellies.
