Colorful Aguadilla

Apparently the artist who painted the town (literally) of Yauco has been going around the island and finding other similar neighborhoods to paint. We had heard that Aguadilla got the touch up as well and just had its grand hurrah a little bit ago. We spent the afternoon wandering around and stopped by Rompeolas by the sea for a bite to eat. It is pretty cool, but I think it would have been a little neater had they changed it up a little (maybe polka dots instead of patchwork?). Still very eye catching and a fun little jaunt up many a flight of stairs.

From the park, El Parterre, in Aguadilla looking up; it’s hard to miss!

The subdued park is such a contrast

El Parterre park was very old European in design

I am still surprised people live in this type of hodge-podge and very poor neighborhood. There is no way this would be allowed to fly in modern building codes, but I think they have been sort of grandfathered in from long ago when these were just squatter shanties during the sugar cane days.

Britton carried Aeden all the way to the top!

Having fun!

Look, we are camouflaged!

In a little side room/casita the residents encouraged us to take pictures

Here fishy, fishy

People hanging out watching all the tourists check out their houses

One guy ran out of his house and chased us down to give us these old calendar photos of how Aguadilla was in the olden days

Cool detailed murals all around

From the road

Some areas up there still hadn’t been repaired since the hurricane

We had a nice lunch seaside at Rompeaolas

Look at that sweet smile!

Near Rompeolas there is a HUGE ceiba tree

It had dropped its petals everywhere!

And Aguadilla’s gorgeous shoreline as we drove home

Season’s Greetings -A Photo Update from A, B, and C

Now that we have Baby Aeden with us we are A, B and C (Aeden, Britton and Cassie)! So we thought we would make it as easy as A, B and C to say Happy Holidays and Felicidades from our home to yours! 🙂 Here are a few photos and a short video from our life recently in Puerto Rico. It has been speeding right along. I can’t believe Aeden is already 3 months old and almost sleeping through the night! Now I might have time to actually blog a little more again.

The beauty never ceases to amaze me!

Lots of yard work even in winter -Baby Aeden is lulled to sleep by the sounds of the mower haha

Cool abandoned airplane I saw off the road in Aguadilla looks like it should be in Lost

This banana tree was just asking to be photographed in this light. Gorgeous!

So was this monstera! One of my favorites in the flower bouquets and arrangements we sell

We took a little holiday photoshoot at the finca with our little Santa Baby

So cute!

Mommy’s kissing Santa!

My most precious gift!

Afterward he was tuckered out!

Check out how long this banana flower goes (with Elsa from the Farmer’s Market)

Always lots of Holiday Cheer around here (haha)

Watch out! It’s pica pica season!! eek this stuff is painfully itchy

My big boy can almost keep his head up by himself. He is growing so fast!

These prayer/blessing/curse candles are definitely a “thing” here

Close up of the “velas

Campaign to try to prevent people from shooting guns in the air whilst celebrating the holidays -“ni una bala mas al aire” means “not even one bullet more in the air!”

He can be such a guy smiley when he wants to be. My little flower child

He IS awesome like Daddy!

Awesome Daddy trying out the Moby wrap

News Anchor Jeremy Hubbard visited us here in PR a bit ago. For those of you in Colorado, stay tuned to Fox 31 in Denver for a couple of news stories about us that should air this week and in January!

How to Make Coquito

Coquito means little coconut and it is the traditional Puerto Rican holiday drink. Sometimes compared to eggnog, coquito is not only the rum transport of choice this time of year, but also a common gift. Many stores have decorative bottles and pretty much everyone has a secret ingredient (everything from eggs to Nutella) in the version they make. Unlike eggnog which is commonly just purchased at a store in the states, most coquito is homemade.

Coquito Ingredients

I have had coquito before but never made it. I asked our neighbors Israel and Millie about it and they said we should make some together. Britton, Aeden and I spent an afternoon making this delicious, creamy goodness together. Check it out:

The recipe is pretty simple:
One can condensed milk
One can evaporated milk
One can coconut cream (usually Coco Lopez brand)
1-2 tablespoons vanilla
Ground cinnamon (nutmeg and cloves are also great) to taste
1/2 cup more or less of rum

Mix, refrigerate and serve or bottle and give to friends

Buen Provecho, Salud and Felicidades!

Yauchromatic: Colorful Yauco, Puerto Rico

Yauco and its vibrancy!

We have had many missions related to creating this baby and one of our most recent ones took us to Hospital San Lucas in Ponce. From the highway whenever we drive to Ponce I have always been curious about the colorful little town of Yauco with its various shades of houses almost glowing in the distance, but I had recently seen that they have invested in even more paint! It is now Yauchromatic!

Welcome to Toon Town with a little toon cat!

We went with our friend who graciously drove us for a loong day and then checked out Yauco’s murals as well as the strange little hilly/stair access-only painted area. I have always said Puerto Rico is like going into Toon Town in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit because it is so vibrant and with such strange characters, but the little coffee town of Yauco took it to a whole new level.

After climbing all the stairs, we looked out over the city and ocean

Even though it is very poor and run down, it just seems happier with paint!

When you’re in Toon Town, you sort of feel like a Toon yourself

Indian Statue and more paint!

Even the downtown near the church has been painted up

Here’s a short little video we made of our time in Yauco.
