The Selling Continues: There Goes the Corvette

We have been continuing to steadily sell our stuff.  Some has been easy to sell, some a bit harder.

This last weekend I sold my 1975 Corvette that I’ve had for 13 years.  I woke up and thought “Today is the day I sell my car”.  So I took some pictures and listed it on Craigslist.  It was sold that night!

It makes sense to sell it on a few levels.  First, it doesn’t make much sense to take it to PR.   Second, it would cost a lot to ship.  Third, the frame would most likely rust away quickly.  Fourth, it’s almost 40 years old.  Fifth, well the list goes on for a while….

I was pretty lucky with the car though.  I sold it for what I paid for it and I got to enjoy driving around in an old Corvette for many years.  Those memories will stay with me forever.   We took it on some of our first dates. Schnoodle rode in the cubby area. We took it on our wedding. I even got my first speeding ticket in it.

On the flip side, I don’t have to worry about it any longer.  It did leak just about everywhere it could leak from and I was always afraid that it was going to break and cost a lot of time / money to fix.  Now I don’t have to pay insurance and registration on another car too.  I no longer have those worries floating around in the back of my head which is nice.

Another big item, gone. And another step closer to Puerto Rico.

Snow Day Fun at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery

Sunday was a very snowy day with about 8 inches of the cold white stuff falling. We had made plans with our friend Sean to go to Fort Collins to see the Museum of Discovery there. We weren’t sure if they would be open or not, but when we called and they said they were and Sean said he would drive in his 4×4 truck we said we were up for the adventure! And it was a bit of an adventure…

We actually got a flat tire on the way in! Thankfully we were all the way to Fort Collins and were stopped at a gas station because he noticed the tire pressure slowly draining away. So I went in the store and got a hot tea and Britton and Sean changed the tire out in the snow.

Then we arrived at the museum and had a lot of the fun. The main station we spent the most time at was the music one. It was fun playing with all their hands on exhibits and learning a little bit about different musical instruments and the science behind music.

They also had some nature science exhibits with an emphasis on the flora and fauna that is or was native to this area. Including this bison!

It’s been a long time since we’ve gone to a museum but this one was fun and interactive. There were a lot of little kids around, but since we didn’t have any to watch ourselves, we got to act like them instead! 🙂

Afterward we went to our favorite restaurant in Fort Collins and I had the most delicious Harvest Squash Ravioli and we topped the night off by splitting some tiramisu. The roads were icy as we drove home, but we made it back just fine even with the new tire.

Overall it was a great Sunday snow day adventure!

Nice Day for a Drive to Estes Park

I woke up yesterday and didn’t really have anything to do, so I figured I’d take a drive up to the mountains while I still can.  Driving up to Estes on a Thursday is definitely the way to go.  Traffic was virtually non-existent and the roads were completely dry and clear.

During the summer months these roads get so packed with people (tourist season) that it takes a lot of the flow away from the driving experience.  The road has long sweeping turns that keep you engaged the whole way up.  The Big Thompson Canyon is a road I have been on virtually my whole life.  When I was a kid the family would take trips up.  When I started to drive it was a common destination.  It is a drastic departure from the mundane straight highways that are on the flat plains of Colorado and it is only about an hour away from Greeley!

When we move to Rincon I am either going to list my Corvette for sale, or store it away.  I am not sure yet.  I thought about shipping it, but it just doesn’t make much sense in PR.  It has stayed rust free living it’s life in low humidity and salt free air.  I think it could get destroyed in fairly short order if it were to live in PR with us…lol.

In any case it is nice to have a fun classic car that is V8 powered with a 4 speed to climb up hills effortlessly.  My Honda doesn’t do nearly as well.  It doesn’t use nearly as much gas either!  It is more about the smiles per gallon.

The House Husband

Due to my recent medical emergency, I have been directed by my doctor to take off two months (FMLA) from work in order to rest, recover and do tests and treatments.  I am also supposed to avoid driving, if possible.  I have just started my second week and while I have gotten a lot better with more sleep and less stress, I still feel compelled to do something, anything! with my day besides watch daytime TV. So I have become a house-husband.

I have always been the tidier of the two of us and I don’t mind doing the dishes, mopping the floors, and cleaning the counters as well as taking on the “traditional” male activities of mowing the lawn and fixing stuff around the house. Yes, I know, Cassie is very lucky to have such a helpful husband! 🙂

So even though so far it’s only been a short time off, I have been able to get into some “deep cleaning” projects that we were planning on hiring a cleaning company to do when it came time to move to Puerto Rico. Things like cleaning behind the stove and the fridge. Washing the curtains. Cleaning out the cabinets. Washing the outside and inside of the windows. Some of these were LONG past due. I have also started to sort through  more of our stuff and look at what should be sold, given away or trashed.

I have begun to have a routine where I read a Spanish-language instruction booklet in the morning, take a walk and start on a cleaning project or two. Cassie meets me for lunch at home when she can. If I need something Cassie can drive me there or I can walk or ride my bike to the store that is about 2 miles away.   It has been refreshingly simpler with more time to think and rest and no rush except for tasks that I choose for myself.

We are normally DINKs (Dual Income No Kids) and so our first priority is on work and second on our after work goals like our rentals and third on everything else, including housework and health. So this has been a nice shift to reshuffle priorities a little and get healthy, ready for Puerto Rico and back up to speed.

It has also been a good experiment for what it will be like when we live in Puerto Rico. We will be in charge of the activities of our day, which is both exciting and intimidating.  Overall, I think it has taught us that we are just naturally “productive” and will feel compelled to do something with some sort of tangible result/improvement for our having been there. While lying on the beach is great, we crave that feeling of accomplishment and achievement. So, no matter what our “titles” or spheres of influence, this break has shown me that we are sure to stay busy.
