Out and About Around Town in Photos: March/April 2016

We have been busy at the finca, but we’ve also been out and about quite a bit. We always see such interesting things and have so much fun whenever we go out. I often don’t have the camera with me or I just miss something, but here are a few occasions where we managed to capture the moment just right.

Britton Bar Cuajito
If you’re hanging out at a true Boricua bar, you’ll know it by the artwork on the walls, the generous amounts of mayo-ketchup you are served and the big pot of homemade cuajito on the counter -yum!

And where is the best place for a kid’s birthday party (or anyone’s really)? The beach of course!

Computer repair island style strange sights
And it’s also apparently a good place for computer repair too! Who knew!? 🙂

And you’ll really feel like a boss when you’re playing at a billiards hall furnished with office chairs! haha!

And don’t forget to take in the most gorgeous ocean views while filling up with gas or washing your car!

How can you not love a place like this?! It’s so much fun!

An Art Show and Beach House Party

Lately we have been making great strides at the cabin. The siding is finished, electrical is 3/4 installed and the covered awning has begun. It’s looking really good.

We have also been going out and having a lot of fun at various events and functions. The other day we went to Casa Hines to see one of our artist friend’s art shows. Rincón has an awesome community of artists here. Rincón has been called little Hollywood by some, but it is also sort of a Bohemian village of artistic talent as well.

We also recently went to a beach house birthday party where our band, the Rincón Continentals were asked to play a set.

Life is so fun. So much like a dream. One minute we are hob-nobbing in swanky locales with friends and local celebrities and playing music under palms trees and the next we are hunting down rats, nailing up boards, rescuing baby chicks, picking fruit and cleaning off turkey poop. And we enjoy it all. I love that I just never know exactly where the next adventure will take us.

A Walk to the 2016 Corona Pro Surf Contest

This weekend we walked from our house to Domes Beach to check out one of the biggest parties in Rincón: the annual Corona Pro Surf Contest. There wasn’t much in terms of waves, but it was still a big crowd. We had learned from years past not to drive or you would end up walking anyway. It is so nice to be able to just walk there. We had a great time and saw lots of friends and neighbors on our way. Because walking is such a slower pace it also gave me a chance to take some great pictures all along Highway 413 which is also known as the Road to Happiness. Here are a few plus a video I compiled. Enjoy.

Tide Pool Fun at Steps Beach

Steps Beach
Steps Beach is named after these concrete steps that have been there for many, many years

One thing that is great about Rincón is that there are so many different beaches for different types of activities. There are long stretches of sand to walk or run or search for shells and sea glass, there are great surf beaches, swimming beaches and snorkeling beaches and even a beach to launch boats (the Marina). Steps Beach, also known as Playa Escalera in Spanish, is part of the 3 Palmas Marine Reserve and is probably most famous for its snorkeling. Here you can often spot sea turtles and it has one of the best elk horn coral formations in the entire Caribbean. Now that we have a waterproof camera (thanks Sean!) we need to go out and take more underwater pictures.

Playing in the tide pools

But on this particular day, we got to enjoy another special part of Steps Beach: the tide pools! Especially for folks with young children or people with limited swimming skills, the tide pools are awesome. The sun warms the water up and they are just deep enough to sort of float on top. There are little hermit crabs and snails and small fish in there with you so it’s a lot of fun to search for creatures as you laze about in the warm water.

Floating and playing around in the tide pools

It was a great place to spend time with our friend Missy and her munchkins. We had a nice picnic lunch and watched the parasailors, snorkelers and boats as they floated past. And Britton and I each took a turn swimming in the deep area as well. But mostly we just hung out under the shade trees and in the pools. There were a few people out, but since it was a weekday it wasn’t too crowded. Just a really nice way to relax!
