Friends, Fun and Contra Dancing

Saturday was a fun day and night. Britton found out one of his long-time high school friends was going to be driving through Colorado from Texas and wanted to hang out. Shana asked me if I wanted to go Contra Dancing, which I had never even heard of before she told me about it, and so since Britton had company, I went with her. It was SO much fun. You get a little dizzy with all the twirling, spinning, swinging and so on, but it was awesome. I was sweating and laughing the whole time.

Contra is hard to describe. It is kind of like square dancing, except it is done in a long line and to what kind of sounds like Celtic music. It’s a little like those old Elizabethian movies where they move between each other and switch partners except people weren’t all that dressed up. There were way more women than men, so I think if Britton ever went with me, he’d be a hot commodity.

All the Swinging to one side left my right hip sore

After Contra, Shana dropped me off at home but Britton and Sean weren’t there, so we (Shana and I) decided to go meet them at the bar. We hung out there and talked for a while-till about 2 in the morning, but then the time fell back because of Daylight Saving and it was only 1:30am when we got home. 🙂 It was a fun day.

Later that evening with Sean, Britton, Shana and me

Chickens and Eggs Article Printed

Another of the blogs I wrote for the Greeley Tribune was printed today. I am an official blogger for the Healthy Habits blog on their website, and occassionally, they will publish a blog into hard copy. It is fun to see your work in print. This particular one is based on our experience with our chickens, that I have written about here as well. The only downside to getting printed is when the editing is done by someone else. They took out probably the most important paragraph:

“<p>Overall, chickens are a fun addition to any sustainable-living adventure, and I would recommend them whole-heartedly. These eggs have health-benefits that go above regular eggs as well. Not only are you lowering the number of confined animals (sometimes over 30,000 chickens in one hangar never see the light of day or step on the ground), but eggs from chickens that are allowed to roam freely in the yard have a higher omega 3 ratio than those who are fed only grains. They also usually have larger and more brightly-colored yolks which indicate high-vitamin levels. And contrary to popular belief they do not increase blood cholesterol levels in a healthy diet.

I wish they would have put this picture in to illustrate it as well. Store-bought egg left, Home-grown egg, right

I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that we have so many confined-animal feeding operations (CAFOs) all over our county…hmmm

Halloween Party or The Beach Bum and Bohemian

One of my friends from work threw a Halloween Party/Belly Dancing Performance at a dance studio in Eaton. Britton and I went for a little while. It was fun to watch the dancing and the costume contest. I went as Joni Mitchell/70’s Bohemian in one of my mom’s old shirts and an old hat and Britton went as a Beach Bum in Puerto Rico in the required crazy fro, that you can also see on the About Us Page.

More Around the House and Yard

Fall has descended. The tomatoes have suffered their first frost, so we had to go and pick them. The deciduous trees are all turning yellow, red and brown and it looks gorgeous outside. We are back up to about 60 degree weather, so we have been spending time outdoors again. We have also started making “cold weather food” like warm breads, soup, chili, spaghetti and so on. Autumn can be comforting if you don’t have to go outside when it is really cold.
