Saturday Congas at the Balneario

The last couple of Saturdays we have been heading down to the balneario (public swimming beach) in Rincón to jam with some local congueros. They have been meeting up for some time, but we didn’t realize it was a planned and open event! The first time we saw them we had stopped by the balneario one morning and were enjoying the beach scene of diving pelicans, funny little grackle birds, boats, swimmers and parasailers but slowly kept getting drawn closer and closer to the drummers and the trance-like beats. As I admired the beautiful congas and djembes, they encouraged us to grab some percussion instruments and join the group. Soon we were enveloped into the fold.

As we talked and got to know each other, they said we should come back each Saturday and join them as it is open to everyone. They were convinced I had to be a Latina and specifically from Colombia because of the way I speak Spanish. Britton, they could tell was still “aprendiendo” but he has improved a lot as well! Every day we fit in more and more here! Come down to the balneario some Saturday morning and join us!

Beautiful Rincón: Tres Palmas Peace

Cow sunset
A classic shot I took from Facebook. I wish I knew who the photographer was to give credit.

Our favorite drive in Rincón is around the point and down through Tres Palmas. Often there are cows and donkeys peacefully enjoying the field with tall coconut palm trees swaying in the distance. And when the waves are up, it’s a great place to scope them out as they crash and send salt spray to aromatize the air. Every time we drive past there or stop to go to Steps Beach I remind myself what a magically gorgeous place this is and how fortunate we are to live here. I think nearly all of us here in Rincón hope that this piece of land stays just as it is. For cows – not condos!

Ombak Bikini Bash at Villa Playa María

Sometimes you have moments that are just simply beautiful and inspiring. One such moment was a warm Sunday in January here in Rincón. We had heard about the Ombak Bikini Bash but didn’t know much about it. We had never been to Villa Playa María, but it is a gorgeous Villa right below Calypso on María Beach.

This was a cool event complete with free drinks, a bikini fashion show, hair braiding, snacks, pool and beach access and even live music. It was a beautiful day to hang out with friends and enjoy life. Thank you to everyone who helped put this party on! We hope to come to the next one!

Rincón Mayoral Inauguration and RBC’s 3!

Rincón, el mejor lugar para vivir. The best place to live!

Harvesting mandarin tangerines from our own trees!

This Saturday we had another nice day. The winter fruit is in season and we’ve been steadily cleaning out the cabana and moving over everything to the cabin where we are now living. We jammed with the band and then later that evening we went downtown to the Rincón plaza where there was a huge party going on! It was the mayor’s (alcalde) inauguration (re-election) party!

A huge party right on the street in front of the Alcaldía!

In addition to this huge street party it was our friends Naomi and Sage’s 3rd year anniversary since opening Rincón Beer Company (RBC). In the last three years RBC and the Art Walk (as well as a vibrant and growing Sunday Farmers Market) have synergistically worked together to revitalize the downtown area. Now there are over 4 bars and many restaurants in the downtown area that otherwise was dying a slow death. When RBC came on the scene in the plaza people thought they were crazy because there was virtually no night life downtown and now it is the hip, happening place to be! Way to go, guys!

It is pretty cool to see Rincón grow through the years and to be part of the carnival that never seems to stop.
