Why Are You Leaving?

So as I was doing my ‘exit interview’ with HR, the question came up.  Why are you leaving?

I simply explained that I had some property in Puerto Rico and that I wanted to work on it, and live there.  I had suggested that I could help out my work team by working remote, but since that wasn’t approved, I was quitting to go start on our dream.

She looked at me and then at the boxes on her form. “So…Other?”.  I looked at the form and it had check boxes.  There were selections like “career move”, “illness” and a whole host of other reasons a person might quit their job.

Me: I guess quitting your job to move to an island isn’t on there?
HR: No, no it isn’t.  I guess this is…maybe retirement? Early retirement?
Me: I suppose so, but I don’t like that word.  Is Jubilado a choice?
HR: What’s that?
Me: Nevermind…..I guess just check “other”.

A while ago Cassie and I were talking about retirement and she mentioned that in Spanish the word for “retired” is “Jubilado”.  It comes from the same root as the English word “Jubilation”, which it would seem a more appropriate word than tired, or retired, tired again. We are totally jubilated!

It’s a good sign that you are thinking outside the box, when there is no box to fit you into.

My last day actually felt pretty good.  I don’t have to worry about all the problems that were constantly coming up at work.  It still feels like a normal Saturday, and maybe Sunday will feel about the same too.  Come Monday though, that’s when it will feel like I didn’t go to work.  And when I am in Rincón, it will really hit home. I will be home!

January in Greeley Versus Rincon

I took a picture of Kitty and me today to show Britton just what he was missing -a cold morning that didn’t come out of the negative degrees until nearly noon. He then sent me the below shot of him on the beach on an 80 degree winter day in Rincon. Quite the difference. I know where I want to be (and more than likely will be) this time next year! 🙂

Time For a Little Sunshine

Yellow Flowers

Britton has been enjoying his time off and resting after his major medical incident back in November. He has recovered nearly all of his memory and is functioning quite well with the treatments of the doctor. He has been sleeping through the whole night again and doesn’t seem nearly as anxious either. Life as a whole has gotten much better for him and us. He is scheduled to return to a modified work schedule near the beginning of February.

In the mean time, our good friends have been talking about picking up a property in Puerto Rico as well which would be awesome because we would love to hang out with them there. They love the tropics as we do and I think together we would have a blast. They had a few properties they wanted to check out, and like we did a few years back when we first unknowing found our house, are sending a scout, our friend Matt, to check them out. Britton thought it would be a good time to go on a trip since he is using up all of his time off for the year and it’s a rare opportunity to do something like this with his best friend.

So Britton and Matt will be in Puerto Rico for a little less than a week in the middle of January. They will be staying at our place in Rincon while together they look at properties and do a few  fix-up jobs and clean-up around the property.

Since it is just a short trip, I am going to stay home and vicariously enjoy the sunshine through Britton and Matt’s updates. It will be tough since we’re in the midst of the coldest part of the year, but just knowing that they are down there getting it ready for our final journey coming up will make it all the more sweet.

Ideas for the Wood House in Rincón

Cassie and I have been brainstorming for what we’d like to do with the house.  We’ve told how we go back and forth on either tearing it down and building a concrete place from scratch or working with what we’ve got.

Lately we have been leaning towards working with what we’ve got.  It would move us quicker to our goal of moving to Rincón to keep what we have and simply remodel it.  There are a few things we would like to achieve.

  • A main floor bathroom.
  • A better bathroom in the master bedroom
  • More space / Separate living space
  • More light / brighten it up

We are pretty much certain that we’d take the bathroom that was built on the deck down.  It seems like too much of an add-on and doesn’t really fit.  So what we’d do is just move it to the side of the house and integrate it into the main house structure.  We can make an entrance to it from the inside of the house and from the deck.

The bathroom in the upstairs bedroom is only a toilet and a sink.  We can extend the room and reconfigure that bathroom to take up more space.  We can put in a shower or bath so that the master bedroom upstairs is a bit more complete.  We are thinking about also adding an upper deck off the master bedroom.

We can pour a concrete floor under the house, then close in the lower area and frame rooms and a bathroom.   This would provide more living space and/or a separate living area which could be used for visitors when they stay with us.

As far as more light, we will take out some of the shutter windows and put in more traditional glass windows on the ocean side.  We are thinking about also putting in a glass sliding door to let more light in.  I’ve seen some of them that are rated for hurricane force impacts.  I’d have to do more research on the windows available and how they hold up in high winds, but adding slots for storm shutters /plywood would be part of the plan.

Here is a rough sketch of what we were thinking.
