Trip to Puerto Rico Planned

It is my turn to see the property! We have a trip planned to visit in January which will be nice. Two and a half weeks.

Looking Out from the Main House

I spoke to Alwilda the other day and she said they started picking coffee. That day alone they had picked 1,000 lbs and she said there was a lot more to go. When she started talking about the papaya, pineapples, breadfruit, starfruit , etc…I knew we needed to visit.

In late January it will be super cold here so it will make for a good vacation time. I need to find a deal on a rental car so if anyone knows of anything please comment. I’d kind of like to rent a Jeep so I can explore a bit more than we did when we had just a normal car. Plus the river at the property would be fun to cross. I doubt a neon would make it..lol.

Weekend in G-Town and The Rum Diary

We just hung out in Greeley this weekend. Went out to dinner at the Rio one night, stayed home most of the day Sunday. Saw our friend JR who we haven’t seen in a long time.

Britton, Me, and JR

I have also almost finished reading The Rum Diary  by Hunter S. Thompson, the author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It almost entirely takes place in Puerto Rico, although there is quite a long part about getting drunk and partying in St. Thomas. Apparently, Hunter S. Thompson once lived in Puerto Rico and this is basically a thinly-veiled journal of his time as a writer at the Star. I also just now learned that Johnny Depp is set to yet-again play the lead character in a film-version of the book.

I think Thompson had a love-hate relationship with the island. Throughout various passages you can sense a sort of uneasiness, but there are moments when he relaxes and takes it all in, and it takes his breath away. From the book: “I bought a Times for forty cents and read about a blizzard in New York: ‘Merrit Parkway closed…BMT stalled four hours…snowplows in the streets..everyone late to work…’ I looked out at the bright Caribbean morning, green and lazy and full of sun, then I put the Times away.”

Hunter S. Thompson died in Colorado, February 20, 2005, and The San Juan Star , the primary English-language newspaper on the island closed on August 29, 2008.

And a song of the day (de jour/del dia) from BK:

Bribery is the name of the game

Awilda called while we were watching the Veep debates last night which was fine with me because it turned out to be much more boring than I was hoping. She sounded just kind of lonely and talked with me in Spanish for about a half an hour. She is such a nice lady and it’s always good practice to speak Spanish. Puerto Rican Spanish is sometimes much different than Mexican Spanish which is what I know best.

Sounds like she is optimistic about this new friend she has there at the Dept of Natural Resources. She did say, however, that we need a “padrinaje” and that that would make it go much easier. I am not exactly sure what a “padrinaje” is but I think it is related to a “bribe” which I understand.  Padrino is like a sponsor, or someone who helps smooth the way with a little money…aka grease for the palms. Sounds like without this “padrinaje” things move slowly and it goes to the bottom of the pile of things to do whereas with a “padrinaje” they magically move to the top….

I know that bribery is at play everywhere, and not just Puerto Rico, but it’s interesting to think of it being so blatant and just the way of the land, the way things get done. Here, I think it is usually the top officials getting some type of perk or the connections that lead to something, but not with random people because that would make it obvious. I don’t know, what do you think?  Have you had to give out bribes just to get basic services? Britton and I were talking about it and if that is just the way it is, well, maybe we need to play their system, but we don’t even know how much this would be, or if there is any guarantee it would work. Also, doesn’t that just perpetuate the activity more? Or does the phrase “when in Rome, do as the Romans” fit better. Or how about the Spanish version, “A donde fueras, haz lo que vieras” which means literally, Wherever you go, do as you see. I think we will wait a while longer. If Awilda wants to be/do the padrinaje, she would know how to do it much better than we would!

Song of the Day

We have been waiting for the property title to come thru. Waiting and waiting it feels like. I spoke to the lawyer yesterday and he said that the department of natural resources has a survey team scheduled to visit the property soon. They are going to verify the dimensions of the easment and river area. Once that has been verified (measure twice and cut once?) then the legal team at the department can sign off on the deed to the easement. It sounds like it is still months away at this point. We did however forward our case number on to someone that may be able to help? We shall see. This has given us an opportunity to save some more so that is always good.

So I decided to put a song of the day out for download because the lyrics remind me of our chance in Puerto Rico. It’s a radiohead song:

“In the deepest ocean
Bottom of the sea
Your eyes
They turn me
Why should I stay here?
Why should I stay?
I’d be crazy not to follow
Follow where you lead

Your eyes
They turn me
Turn me on to phantoms
I follow to the edge of the earth
And fall off
Everybody leaves
If they get the chance
And this is my chance”
