The Rincon Marina and the Goat House

We have been working hard on the farm, but it was a nice break to go out to a fun little beach gathering at the Marina on a Monday afternoon. Because why not?

After playing around for a couple of hours, someone had a great idea to drive up to the Goathouse to watch the sunset. The Goathouse is something of landmark for Rincon. I don’t know the whole story behind it, but it was obviously going to be an awesome rotunda house with a 180 view down to the Marina but long ago got caught in some building/legal trouble and became another abandoned property. Many surfers use it to check the waves in the morning (Dawn Patrol). And it has awesome sunsets only 1 minute from the beach so we caravanned up to it.

I am not totally sure where it got the name Goathouse, but I have heard that it has housed more goats than people in its current iteration though none were present when we were there.

If you visit the Goathouse, remember that there are neighbors and they want you gone right after sunset so as to avoid too much mischief. Definitely check it out though as it is a key part of the fabric of Rincon!

Beachy Days

Enjoying Steps Beach

Most things on the island revolve around the beach at least to some extent. We don’t always go swimming or into the water, but we are often near it in one way or another. Here are a few fun random pictures near the sea.

Magical Music and Other Moments

Party Scene
Awesome photography by JR Imagery

We’ve been focusing a little more on our music with the band again. It has been somewhat of a slow season for tourism and that has affected everyone’s ability to get gigs. We’ve started trying out a new strategy to help take away some of the risk for the bar owners and it seems to be working. We really do love to play out and I take it as an opportunity not only to play music but for performance art.

If you are part of a live band, in my opinion, you should treat it as a show. That means gimmicks and fun and lots of engagement with the audience. I love this because it means I get to come up with themes and dress up. It’s like a costume party every gig! I am in my element! The more people who are in on the gag, the more fun it is too! We recently played out at Pool Bar as the opening band for Masking Tape and it was a lot of fun!

Some people are harder to get encouraged to dress up, but that is how memories are made!

Not Blurry
See how much more fun it is to dress up?! (With Mark and Rob)

This past week we had another gig at Willie’s Bar at Club Nautico in the Marina. It was another memorable moment because it really tested our improvisational skills. Pretty much everything you could think to go wrong, did. The new bass amp was buzzing in one of the sockets, so we had to move it. Then our friend the conga player surprised us by arriving late and so we had to fill some air time jamming as he set up. Next, the power went out for a good 20-30 minutes during which time the only unplugged instruments who were Rob on the drums, Humberto on congas and Markus on Trombone continued playing as Roberto, Britton and I played a little percussion.

Then I went out into the crowd and pulled people up to dance in the dark with us to the rhythms of the drums. People from around in the marina area without power all came out to see who was playing in the dark! It was an awesome moment. The craziness wasn’t over even when the power came back though, as the microphones lost sound for two more songs. However, in spite of, and probably because of all of these set backs and our ability to steer (and dance our way) through, we have been invited back for yet another show in a couple of weeks.

My outfit for Willie’s was pirate wench/gypsy esque. The beads on my skirt actually helped when the power went out!

In addition to all of these musical memories, we have had some other magical and fun moments as well.

We like to go out and support other musicians and businesses as well. Hijos de Puntas at Calypso and me with Cindie Rice – a Rincon legend in her own right

We also had our first guests at the cabana and it was a lot of fun showing them around Rincon. It’s cool when internet meets reality!

I Love the Nightlife

And I like to boogie.

Cassie Cowboy rincon continentals

Since moving here we have had the best night life. Britton and I enjoyed going out at night in Colorado too, but generally we only did that in the summer because nighttime in the winters of Colorado was just sooo cold that it was much smarter to stay inside and watch a movie.

One of our new Spanish surf tunes: Surfeando

So Britton and I have a pretty active nightlife nowadays. A lot of time is spent with our band either practicing or playing shows out. But we also hang out with other friends too. We enjoy going to the “gringo” bars like Calypso or Pool Bar when we have friends visiting but we also like going out to some more traditional Boricua bars.

The other night I went to a fun book club event in Mayaguez and then Britton and I met up with a friend at a bar to listen and dance to live merengue and bachata music and play a little pool.

We saw the cutest old guy dancing alone, so I just had to go up and dance with him and tell him how much I love that he dances. ¡Hay que disfrutar! Dancing just feels so good!

This guy was so much fun!

We also enjoy Art Walk on Thursday nights and other events around town. However, sometimes we have to reign in our nights because when we get home at 2 or 3 in the morning, we basically have to completely write off the next day. But these nights are where memories are made!
