The Black Chicken Laid her first Egg!

I was surprised to find a little gift from the black chicken today when I went to bring the chickens some water. She laid her first egg! It was much smaller than Ms. Henny Penny the Leghorn usually lays (like Extra Extra Jumbo size). Everything we read about the Sumatra breed of chicken says that they lay white eggs, but no, she definitely laid a brown egg. So now that our Leghorn champion layer is out of commission due to molting, the black one can take over. I don’t think she will lay as many as the Leghorn, but it is nice to know that we have a backup so we don’t have to buy more eggs. Thanks, Black One (no we still really don’t have names for them).

Chickens and Eggs Article Printed

Another of the blogs I wrote for the Greeley Tribune was printed today. I am an official blogger for the Healthy Habits blog on their website, and occassionally, they will publish a blog into hard copy. It is fun to see your work in print. This particular one is based on our experience with our chickens, that I have written about here as well. The only downside to getting printed is when the editing is done by someone else. They took out probably the most important paragraph:

“<p>Overall, chickens are a fun addition to any sustainable-living adventure, and I would recommend them whole-heartedly. These eggs have health-benefits that go above regular eggs as well. Not only are you lowering the number of confined animals (sometimes over 30,000 chickens in one hangar never see the light of day or step on the ground), but eggs from chickens that are allowed to roam freely in the yard have a higher omega 3 ratio than those who are fed only grains. They also usually have larger and more brightly-colored yolks which indicate high-vitamin levels. And contrary to popular belief they do not increase blood cholesterol levels in a healthy diet.

I wish they would have put this picture in to illustrate it as well. Store-bought egg left, Home-grown egg, right

I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that we have so many confined-animal feeding operations (CAFOs) all over our county…hmmm

More Around the House and Yard

Fall has descended. The tomatoes have suffered their first frost, so we had to go and pick them. The deciduous trees are all turning yellow, red and brown and it looks gorgeous outside. We are back up to about 60 degree weather, so we have been spending time outdoors again. We have also started making “cold weather food” like warm breads, soup, chili, spaghetti and so on. Autumn can be comforting if you don’t have to go outside when it is really cold.

Autumn Life around the Yard

I love gardening, so it is sad to see our tomato plants and roses slowly wither away and die. The only plant that is great in the fall are mums, or chrysanthamums (sp). The white chicken is still the only one to lay, but the black one is getting big. She looks like she is about double the size of little miss leghorn. Here are some pictures of the cooling Colorado weather. Britton and I have decided to go to Puerto Rico in January with a closing -or not. We need to get down there, and this weather is ever the convincer.
