Fun out and About: Rincón, Mayaguez and Boquerón

We’ve been getting much further with the cabin. We now have the drywall installed and are working on the flooring. So close to moving in! But we’ve also been taking some time to go out and have a little fun! Staying close to home we spent a nice afternoon with some friends at Steps Beach. It was a bit rainy, but the water was warmer than the air! We slid around on the slimy mossy rocks, snorkeled and dove for pebbles and just lazed in the water and on the beach.

Silly girls!

I also found a great sturdy vine and I just had to climb and swing from it. I think I am becoming more and more monkey living on this island!

Hey, hey I’m a monkey!

Before our band practice I also had a chance to have a little chat with the horse that is pastured where we park. We’ve been watching him grow from a foal to a young horse and it’s pretty cool.

We go into what we call “town” about once a week now for materials for the cabin. Usually that means Mayaguez, but sometimes it’s to Aguadilla. This time when we went to Mayaguez we stopped at the area near the water that they use for the “ferry.”

The ferry according to some guy there in this case isn’t a lancha but rather a small cruise ship that goes to “Santo Domingo.” And I don’t mean Santo Domingo the capital city, but rather the word you may hear here more often than not for the Dominican Republic as a whole. But apparently this nice cruise ship is being repaired in Africa….The things you learn just hanging out.

Next we went searching for a little nightlife. It was not the weekend yet, so we weren’t sure where to go. We ended up down in Boquerón! I don’t think Britton and I had been in Boquerón since our honeymoon. It’s such a fun and lively place. I loved all the live music and all the restaurants that are right on the water. We even danced a little salsa! So fun!

Boqueron Galloways 11 years laterWe ate at a restaurant on the water that we could feed tarpon from the table. We went to this on our honeymoon! Crazy!

Whether we stay home in Rincón or venture out a little further, I am still just so delighted with this fun-loving island!

Here’s a quick video of our time in and around Boquerón.

An Island Wedding

We recently went to one of the most beautiful weddings we’ve ever been to of some wonderful friends. We are so happy for them! It was held right on the beach by the Marina in Rincón and the reception was directly adjacent at the posh restaurant, La Copa Llena.

Fun, friendly guests!

Tommy and Juni
The beautiful and happy bride and groom! We love you, Tommy and Juni!

Once you are married, you can’t help but think back to your own wedding whenever you go to a wonderful wedding like this. We also thought about our honeymoon to Puerto Rico that ultimately brought us full circle here.

Britton con pantalones
Take a long gander at this man in pants! First time he’s worn pants out in nearly 3 years! Wonders never cease! We can actually clean up from time to time! haha

The food was a delicious modern take on Puerto Rican cuisine

And we danced the night away!

The gorgeous bride and me! Someone said we looked like sisters. What a compliment!

This was our first wedding we attended in Puerto Rico and it was fantastic! It’s pretty cool for them to have a “destination wedding” right where they live! Congratulations to the bride and groom!

Out and About Around Town in Photos: March/April 2016

We have been busy at the finca, but we’ve also been out and about quite a bit. We always see such interesting things and have so much fun whenever we go out. I often don’t have the camera with me or I just miss something, but here are a few occasions where we managed to capture the moment just right.

Britton Bar Cuajito
If you’re hanging out at a true Boricua bar, you’ll know it by the artwork on the walls, the generous amounts of mayo-ketchup you are served and the big pot of homemade cuajito on the counter -yum!

Our latest gig with our band the Rincón Continentals was at Playa Beach Bar -Yes, that translates to Beach Beach Bar -lol (photo thanks to Daisy)

And where is the best place for a kid’s birthday party (or anyone’s really)? The beach of course!

And it’s also apparently a good place for computer repair too! Who knew!? 🙂

And don’t forget to take in the most gorgeous ocean views while filling up with gas or washing your car!

The Good Life in Rincón: Beach Yoga, Local Brews and Fiery Sunsets

We continue to get a lot of work done in the yard. We have cleared close to 2 acres of overgrown weed trees and vines. It is intensely physical work and seems endless, but we are definitely making a dent and digging out from the tangled rat’s nest that results from 10-20 years of neglecting a property in the tropics. We are planning to leave a good portion of the other two acres fairly raw and use it as a jungle sanctuary hiking trail (or paintball area maybe?).

Path to lower area
We call this Hawk Lane as the birds swoop through and it continues to open up

Britton has built the base of the chicken coop and the chickens are doing well. We’ve had a couple of fires to help us clear and some friends and neighbors have helped us and enjoyed the mesmerizing beauty of a fire with us. They called the dinners that are cooked directly on the fire “hobo dinners” which is a cute name. I think it would be fun to have a traditional Puerto Rican pig roast (lechón) some time too!

But in addition to all the work that goes on at the farm, we have also been having some fun off the compound.

We recently went to the Grand Opening of our friends’ business: Rincón Beer Co. in downtown Rincón and had a great time drinking their artisanal beer and listening to a local band called Mijo de la Palma.

I have also recently started going to yoga at the beach platform at the balneario with some friends. It is so peaceful and beautiful to stretch into a pose and look out over the water as the waves lap at the sand and the pelicans and white clouds float across a bright blue sky. We are going to try a Zumba class right near there soon as well. Meanwhile, Britton has been swimming in the sea.

Ohmmmm and Namaste

Additionally we have  been meeting new friends and trying out new restaurants. The other night we had a rooftop dinner with friends and watched a gorgeous sunset. Good friends, food and fun in a great place. Esta es la vida buena. This is the good life.
