Valentine’s Day Adventure

Sweet Valentines

For Valentine’s Day, we headed out to Aguadilla during the day since Aeden was in daycare to do some exploring and go out to a late lunch. We checked out the downtown plaza, saw the flag stairs and then stopped to see the inside of an abandoned airplane. It was like we were on the TV show, Lost!

Awesome abandoned airplane!

Inside of the plane

We enjoyed a nice meal together at Khalan Thai of a stuffed pineapple and then headed on home. Unfortunately as we were driving along, the clutch pedal broke with a loud boom like a gunshot. Britton stopped and tried to fix it with the few parts we had in the car, but it wasn’t going to happen quickly.

Broken down!

We were running out of time to get back and pick up Aeden. A nice man stopped and offered to help. First he tried to help fix the clutch, but when we saw the time, he ended up taking me all the way to Rincon in order to get him before they closed! He took his own time away from his family  going out of his way in order to help a complete stranger! I couldn’t believe it!

It was a reminder that love is also found in the kindness of strangers and that we must always pay it forward whenever we can. You just never know when you’ll need help, so always put good karma into the universe! Britton, meanwhile, worked very hard on the car and managed to drive home without a clutch. It took him nearly 4 hours, but he made it! I know I couldn’t have done that. He is so talented. So it was a very exciting Valentine’s Day with a lot of good lessons. Love one another, never quit trying and help out your fellow human! Of course I love Puerto Rico with all the beautiful enticing beaches and sights, but it’s things like this and the people who make it truly special.

Surfer’s Beach for Survival Beach

Checking out Surfer’s Beach

I have been wanting to check out Survival Beach for some time. It is supposed to have some pretty picturesque sea rocks and caves and a really fun hike. One day we were out driving around and we thought we would run some errands in Aguadilla. I remembered that Survival Beach is accessed by foot with a 30-40 minute hike that starts at Surfer’s Beach. “Hey, let’s check it out!” I’m sure if we were surfers we would already know about it, but it was another first for us.

This sign cracked me up!

To get to Surfer’s Beach you must go through a gated area that looks to be owned by the Electric or Water Company. I assume it is always open, but it was strange that it was gated. Once in, the road is very beautiful lined with palm trees and flamboyans with a rock curb. Upon arrival there is a small skate park and a little coconut drink place that was closed when we arrived. It looked like maybe someone had parked their van to stay/live there with a grill, tarp, clothes hanging out, etc.

Little Coconut Kiosk

Pile of Coconuts (used for said kiosk I presume)

Small skate park and picnic tables

Nice (very tall) bench to watch the waves

Fun at Surfer’s Beach

De Camino a Survival Beach

We found the sign that pointed the way to the start of the hike, but weren’t prepared with the right shoes, food, water, etc. So we walked a few yards down the path that was strewn with fallen trees to one of the beach outcroppings, and said we would save that hike for another day. I am not sure what the story is about why it’s called Survival (or sometimes Survivor Beach), but it did look rough and that you would need to use your survival skills if you washed ashore out there with no road, but a hike of a trail to it.

Going under some fallen trees on the early part of Survival Beach trail

Looks like another adventure is in the queue! But until then we enjoyed our short time at Surfer’s Beach.

Pena Blanca, Rincon Marina, Dome’s Wings and More

Fun times with the boy

My how time flies differently with a kid! We have been having fun trying to go out to various beaches especially now that it is the hot summertime. We have been to Pena Blanca before (a long while ago), but we took a little dip. I would like to bring the snorkel gear as I have heard it’s pretty nice. We went down the stairs and tucked ourselves in under the cave as the swallow birds flew about. Aeden loves, loves the water. I can’t wait to teach him to swim.

The water is so crystal blue and clear!

Recently painted and cool cave area

Family time!

I love this little stairway area. It’s a bit hard to trek especially with people coming from both directions

We also have spent a little time at the Rincon Marina. I call the Marina the “social beach” of Rincon because there is always something going on. Boats comically entering the water (sometimes hitched to a car), the newest gadgets are tried out (motor surfboards, jet skis, water jet packs, etc), there is people watching galore. But now that the “season” is over, it has been a nice, tranquil place to hang out on a weekday or celebrate a birthday.

Happy birthday, Amanda!

Doing things with a baby does make life a little more complicated, but it can be done haha

Me and my sweet waterbaby

And with his daddy

Another blissful moment at the Marina

Don’t worry, I didn’t toss him that high

This kid has such a fun life already!

Flamboyans are back!

My little love and I shared a swing ride at Dome’s Beach

This art installment was made by a local woman named Luisa Acevedo. I love it!

We’ve enjoyed going to the San Sebastian Pulguero most Fridays-with friends Bronia and Andrew

There’s no feeling quite like having a cranky kid trust you so much he falls asleep literally in your arms (it also feels quite heavy to walk like this very far haha)

No wonder he sleeps so well!

Colorful Aguadilla

Apparently the artist who painted the town (literally) of Yauco has been going around the island and finding other similar neighborhoods to paint. We had heard that Aguadilla got the touch up as well and just had its grand hurrah a little bit ago. We spent the afternoon wandering around and stopped by Rompeolas by the sea for a bite to eat. It is pretty cool, but I think it would have been a little neater had they changed it up a little (maybe polka dots instead of patchwork?). Still very eye catching and a fun little jaunt up many a flight of stairs.

From the park, El Parterre, in Aguadilla looking up; it’s hard to miss!

The subdued park is such a contrast

El Parterre park was very old European in design

I am still surprised people live in this type of hodge-podge and very poor neighborhood. There is no way this would be allowed to fly in modern building codes, but I think they have been sort of grandfathered in from long ago when these were just squatter shanties during the sugar cane days.

Britton carried Aeden all the way to the top!

Having fun!

Look, we are camouflaged!

In a little side room/casita the residents encouraged us to take pictures

Britton and the little monster

Here fishy, fishy

People hanging out watching all the tourists check out their houses

One guy ran out of his house and chased us down to give us these old calendar photos of how Aguadilla was in the olden days

Cool detailed murals all around

From the road

Some areas up there still hadn’t been repaired since the hurricane

We had a nice lunch seaside at Rompeaolas

Look at that sweet smile!

Near Rompeolas there is a HUGE ceiba tree

It had dropped its petals everywhere!

Some of the real boats of Aguadilla

And Aguadilla’s gorgeous shoreline as we drove home
