Puerto Rico…A Little Closer

Today we got a little closer to Puerto Rico. (At least figuratively, but perhaps actually since the earth moved a little off its axis after that huge earthquake in Japan.)

We applied for and were approved for two personal loans that will help to cover the difference in buying the place in Rincon. We have also bought our tickets to Aguadilla and back leaving the last week in May and returning early June (2 weeks). And thanks to the kind Kruses, I think we have a place to stay when we first arrive. I am so excited today that I just want to do it now! But I know we must wait, and so I have been keeping myself calm by reading all about the tropical plants we can grow there!

A cool Puerto Rican plant

I picked up one from the library called Growing Tasty Tropical Plants. I am ready to grow, cook with, and eat kumquats, guava, cinnamon, yerba mate, passion fruit, dragon fruit, and miracle berries among many other strange and delectable things. Hurray for gardening in the tropics! And hurray for all these steps that are helping our dream bear fruit as well.

Colorado Emissions Testing in Greeley=Argh

This last weekend we had a nice time at Troy and Lori’s reception, but we also spent most of the weekend working on my car to get it ready for emissions testing. Colorado hasn’t had emissions testing for a few years now, so this is the first year it has returned. We received the car registration cards  in the mail and grimaced. My car runs fine overall, but always has the check engine light on.

That darn check engine light. Britton said that just having that light on is an automatic fail in emissions testing regardless of what’s coming out of the tailpipe. Britton is a man of all trades and is equally good under a car hood as in a sql database, so he set about trying to get that stupid light to turn off. He spent probably about 12-18 frustrating hours this weekend trying to get it to turn off. He put in:

Ignition coils

Coil housing

Ignition module

Spark plugs

Knock sensor

He also looked into the air filter to change it. And this is what he found:

Cat food! ….In my engine!

A mouse must have brought Kitty’s food into my air filter!! That was the weirdest thing!

Cleaning all of that out still didn’t help, but the light would stay off for a short while and then turn back on. We thought if we could get it to the emissions place while it was off, we could pass the test. So we drove around trying to find the emissions places listed on the internet. They do not exist. Do not try to find an emissions place in Greeley based on the internet listings. They are super old and out-dated.

Finally, after getting exasperated. We came back to that light. We tried to change the fuel. Since the tank was full, we couldn’t get a new fill-up so Britton poured a bottle of octane boost into my gas. Apparently my old Oldsmobile needs premium fuel because the light finally shut off. Well, sort of. It still comes on sometimes, but instead of it being on 95% of the time, it has stayed off that much. All this work and frustration because of a test that apparently tests the wrong thing: my fuel type.

Now…this next Saturday will be part 2 of the emissions testing saga where we try and find the emissions testing place in Greeley that is, according to legend ,by the Harley Davidson dealership. Let’s hope it passes after all this.

The car registation cost went up $40 and is now $65 instead of $25. The emissions test will cost probably $20-25 and all these parts to my car cost about $300! And now if I have to buy super premium gas for it when gas prices have already jumped, I am about ready to call off driving.

If the goal is to get people to want to drive less, it’s working! And I will ride my bike as much as possible. Unfortunately I have a new position at work where I have to drive to Timbuktu (AKA Julesburg, Sterling, Briggsdale, etc) and back every week. If we can just get through this stupid emissions test we’ll give them our money and I’ll be back on the road again.

Reception at Dicken’s Tavern plus Pan Loco!

Me and Britton outside Dicken’s Tavern in Longmont

Last night we went to Dicken’s Tavern/Opera House in Longmont to celebrate our friends Troy and Lori’s recent marriage. Britton has been friends with Troy for a long time. Britton and Troy’s brother, Kelly, even went to elementary school together! But they really all became good friends when they worked together at IBM and had the great idea to put a band together.

Troy, Kelly, Dave, Britton and Jimmy -and lots of pizza circa 2003/2004 at Scooters I believe

This band was known as Pan Loco for all the pizza and crazy bread they would eat when they would practice together. They were really a pretty good cover band. Britton played bass guitar, Jimmy played guitar, Troy played guitar and keyboards, Kelly played drums and Dave sang. It was fun. They got gigs on what we call the “8th Ave Circuit”. Basically they are the kind of seedy bars in Garden City like Scooters and Bears. But it was a blast. We invited all our friends out and we rocked out all together.

Pan Loco poster

The band sort of just stopped playing together. Nothing major happened, just life. Everyone was busy and it was difficult to schedule practice times around everyone’s calendars. But for that moment in time, it was great. I was dating a guy in a band! haha

Some of the band looking sharp: Kelly, Troy and Britton

The best thing though, is that we all became good friends and so it was nice to see Troy and Lori and Kelly and Jimmy all together again for the reception. We had a lovely meal at Dicken’s Tavern and then got to watch a  live band upstairs in the Opera House. It was only fitting.

Congratulations Troy and Lori!

On Our Way to a Life in Rincón

The gate to the property, if you look straight above the agent’s head you’ll see the ocean!!

Well, things are moving right along. We are on our way to living in Rincón, Puerto Rico -or at least we’re at the first step of buying a house there. Here’s a list of things we’ve done so far to buy this place:

  1. We have received the final signed contact by all parties.
  2. They’ve deposited our escrow/earnest money.
  3. We’ve contacted and started the inital work with our lawyer (a friend of the Kruses, thanks for the recommendation guys)!
  4. We’ve received approval for our time off of work (two weeks, end of May).
  5. We are pulling our money together from various accounts.

Things we still need to do:

  1. Book a flight to BQN-Aguadilla. Britton says we will never again fly into San Juan if our final destination is the west coast of Puerto Rico!
  2. Get started on the lawyer stuff -title registry look up, writing up the deed of sale, etc. Our lawyer says we can wait another month or so to make sure nothing ties up the property (like a lien) between now and the sales date
  3. Cancel the Isabela deal
  4. Pick the closing date
  5. Reserve a rental car
  6. Confirm where we’ll stay when we get there before we close
  7. Get the cashier’s check for remaining balance
  8. Get a blow-up mattress to sleep on when we first stay the night there! 🙂
  9. Prepare for the adventure of our lives!
