Lares Puerto Rico Property Update

View of the property

View of the property

Well we saw that the Lares, Puerto Rico property was back up and listed for sale online.  The price had gone up in the listing by $15,000.  We had gotten our deposit back after a year + of waiting on the title. She was free to try and sell it to another buyer and we are free to look around again.  So it was not a bad thing at all to see it listed.

I decided to call Alwilda just to see how things were going.  I asked her how the title was coming along?  She replied “I have sold the property”.  I was kind of surprised, but knowing how badly she wants to move I was happy for her.  “Bien! Bien!” I said, “When will you be able to move?”.  She said that she is selling the property in June to some Canadians.

There are a few things that struck me odd about that.

I’ve looked up lots of information over this last year and its kind of hard to pin down, but I don’t believe she can sell the property until it is listed in the title registry.  I’ve seen information online that even says  that a notary has to sign for the deed and the first thing they have to do is verify is that the title is properly filed in the registry.  This one isn’t listed, which is why we couldn’t buy it.  Carlos (her lawyer & also a notary AND ex-son in-law) kept telling us that if we paid with cash, then we would be able to buy the property…Yeah….right.  I have a bridge to sell you.

The other odd thing is that she is selling it in June which means to me she hasn’t sold it.  Maybe they are looking into it the same as Cassie and I did?  To visit and make a decision.

I don’t know the people that are buying the property but if they are reading this (they might stumble across this),  be careful.  There are some odd laws in the books down there.   William is the one who owned the entire plot broke off and sold the 25 acres to Alwilda.  William has children who may have legal right to the land when he dies (Spanish inheritance laws).  When we applied for the loan thru the bank, the bank was saying “no way” due to the title issues.  Some of the best advice I received from a realtor was to go thru the big well known institutions and reputable places.  They are protecting themselves in the deal and as a result you get that protection. Which is why even if you have cash to buy something outright its not always the best route.  You lose a lot of protection so you better be sure you know what you’re doing.  That’s my opinion anyway.

It’s a beauitful property deep in the mountains of Lares and if we could have bought it legit, I think we would have.  However, I think we are just going to look for a place closer to the beaches and wish Alwida the best of luck.  We do feel like we kind of missed out, but it is probably for the best for both parties.  We will continue to stay in touch with her and visit when we are in Puerto Rico next.

Driving in the Colorado Spring Blizzard 2009

Britton has a sharp sense of intuition about him. Mine, apparently, is not quite so honed. There are many occasions that I should have listened to him and instead was stubborn and obstinate. Today was another one of those days. When will I ever learn?

Today I had an all-day conference scheduled in Denver (actually for today and tomorrow).  Whenever I go to Denver for work, I carpool with Britton dropping him off in Longmont and continuing to Denver. Last night Britton says, “You know, there’s going to be a blizzard tomorrow. Maybe we should plan on not going in to Denver.”  Britton is lucky in that he can work from home/remote when on an as needed basis. A blizzard would constitute “as needed”.  I say, “No, you know the weathermen here, they get it wrong as often as right. I need to go to this retreat. And besides, it’s SPRING!” Unfortunately, this storm gave what it promised and spring is deceiving.

So Britton reluctantly goes along with my- what I call adventurous or what he calls crazy- plan. On our way in through the snow Britton stops and pulls into the Loveland/Centerra Mall area and says, “No way, we have to go back home.” Me: Stubborn. Him: “Ok, but you take full responsibility for this day.” Me: Shrug. So on our way we continue. It was pretty bad, but we could still see and I have driven in plenty of blizzards and snow storms in Colorado before. I also call work, call the hotel where the event is going to be at and everything seems to still be going on. We arrive together in Longmont at Britton’s work. He gives me his cell phone since I don’t have one (amazing isn’t it).  Unfortunately, I don’t really know how to use it beyond making basic phone calls.

On my way to Denver… going pretty slow, the snow’s coming down, but it’s still pretty slushy. They’re saying 8-16 inches on the radio. A couple of roads are closed. Schools, businesses are shutting down for the day. Hmmm, I think. Well, I’m already practically there. I get to the hotel, find the conference room, and guess what? Yep. Canceled. And on Britton’s phone it says: 5 missed calls. But, I don’t know how to access them. I manage somehow to get Britton’s work number extracted from the damned contraption and call him as I am stuck and completely stopped on I-270 West trying to get onto 1-25 North. It takes me 1 1/2 hours to go 2 miles. Visibility was ok, but a semi was just stopped in the middle of the road for no reason.

Then the BLIZZARD actually hit me. I really wasn’t scared until this moment. The wind picked up, the skies were a blaring, glaring white, the snow was spitting and swirling in the air and on the ground.  My windshield wipers turned to ice and just smeared the water and ice flakes all around making it impossible to see. My sunglasses made it too dark, but the snow made it too bright. It was just impossible. I was looking under the smeary part of the windshield, leaning to the side and even looking out the side window trying to drive. When I saw that I was the lead vehicle and had no one to follow and no idea where I was on the road, I really flipped out. I just pulled over  to the side still in the middle of the freeway. I got out -very dangerous- and wiped the ice off my wipers. I had to do this two other times.

This helped tremendously. Being basically blind while driving is way worse than the ice or wind. Those I can handle. Not only was I blind because of the ice and white out conditions, but because one of my contacts fell off my eye! While I was driving! There were a couple of times like this that I thought I should just pull over and wait for a couple of hours. But I knew Britton was waiting at work for me. In the meantime on one of my pull-overs, I call my office and lo and behold. All county buildings are closed as well -of course.

I finally arrived at Britton’s work at about 2 o’clock. It took me FOUR hours to go 30 miles that would normally take 30-45 minutes in regular sucky Denver traffic.

Anyway, I know I am stubborn and will probably have another lesson in the future, but I hope I learned something from this one. Plus, it was exciting. And I didn’t end up like the many people on the side of the road or the jack-knifed semis or worse.  We saw one car with a Florida plate and just shook our heads.

Phish at Red Rocks

Well I was hoping to score some tickets to see Phish.  But I received this notice:  “We regret to inform you that you did not get the tickets that you requested through Phish Tickets.”

phish5

They just started touring again and as a result all the tickets are hard to get.  Too many damn hippies.   I have been listening to some live stuff they recorded in Hampton VA at their first show in years.  Its good stuff if you like a “Jam Band”.  Its definately not something you’d hear on the radio as most of the songs carry on for at least 10 minutes and usually longer.  I’ve found that its good music to listen to when I drive to work (45 minutes) or have a project at work.

I’ll keep trying for tickets.  Red Rocks is by far the coolest venue to see a concert at.   Open air music in Colorado during the summer is one of my favorite things.

Maybe I’ll figure out another way to get tickets.

Spring in Greeley Around our House

Well, it is officially spring. I am so happy to be out of winter even though this winter was relatively mild and we were able to take a break from it by going to Puerto Rico. Part of the reason I am excited to live in Puerto Rico is because things grow year-round. I suppose it might be more monotonous in that you get used to seeing green life everywhere, but at the same time, I’ve always had to patiently get through the cold, dark winter in anticipation of spring.

We went to a comedy show last night in Westminster and the comedian was from California. He said he had never had so much pressure to ENJOY THE WEATHER as he has here in Colorado. He said that like 5 people came up to him on Thursday when we had a perfectly clear, warm and sunny day and told him that he better get out and enjoy the weather. It is so true because Colorado weather can turn on you in a matter of minutes.

Anyway, now that spring is here in Greeley, we’re gearing up for a variety of projects around the house. Britton just finished the fence so that the chicken doesn’t destroy our garden. We’ll let her run around in there from time to time to clean out the bugs, but we don’t want her eating the harvest. Britton is also still in the process of building a chicken coop. We would like to reclaim the greenhouse for plants, at least for the spring/summer. We are also planning on getting some more chickens to join her since her friend died unexpectantly.

Also, for the poll, it looks like people wanted to see me in bangs, and Britton without a beard. I decided to cut my own bangs, but will probably have my mom cut my hair for me. Britton promised that with a better razor, he’ll shave off his beard again. Britton thinks I looks more “country” with these bangs. He also said I look like a Cabbage Patch Kid. Is that a compliment??
