It is about 8am and it is negative 15 degrees Fahrenheit (negative 26 Celsius)! That is arctic Colorado weather! Kitty usually sleeps outside, but we took him in to sleep in the laundry room last night because it was so cold. The people on the news kept saying to take pets in, that it is so cold it will freeze human skin within a few minutes, so we were pretty worried about the chickens.
I boiled some water this morning and took it out to them and they were just fine. They were not moving much to conserve energy and the black one had frost on her feathers. I think the leghorn has frostbite on her comb, but they were happy when they heard the ice crack as I poured the hot water into their dish. The high today is only supposed to reach about 10 degrees, so the water will freeze again soon!
When I was bringing water to the chickens, Schnoodle ran out with me to go to bathroom (our yard that is). As I was walking back to the house, she just stood there on three legs. I thought maybe she was standing awkwardly as she peed, but she wouldn’t move. I had to coax her back in, but she was slow and looked like she was in super pain. I think she might have arthritis in one of her back legs, and they say arthritis is more painful when it’s cold (low pressure).
As I was coming to work, my car started slowly and the road conditions weren’t too bad until I tried to get up onto “O” Street from 25th Ave. My car slid around and let out a bunch of steam/smoke as I gunned it up there. As I walked from my car into the building, the contents of my nose froze as well as my hair that was still slightly damp from showering. All of this is to describe that it is frickin’ cold!!! Puerto Rico, you are looking especially lovely today! 🙂
Whooey that’s cold! I was sitting in the hot tub last night looking at the snow and Christmas lights and that big moon raising over the mountains, when I realized that my pony tail was frozen solid (from the steam of the tub)! It was “only”20 degrees. Last night we got down to 16, but today we’re close to 30. We are expecting a PILE of snow. Little Ginger is sad because no walk today, but I am going to go put on tons of clothes and try out the skiis behind the house. We have a jacket AND a sweater for her!
I loved your banana Christmas tree idea. We are using a fake tree which is already decorated in a snowman golf theme. Your cute golfing santa ornament from 2006 is on it!
Hi again,
I forgot to leave a suggestion for your chickens. Plug in dog water bowls are fairly inexpensive and work great to keep the water warmish. Plug in mats for animals are also available which may lower your coop temp several degrees and give the chickens a roosting spot.
I don’t remember us having that kind of low here but you never know!!!
OK that is cold! It hit the the 60s in NYC.
I always say show me your home and I will tell you who you are. Apparently you are warm weather in a cold situation 🙂
Annie-
Thanks for the suggestions. We have thought about putting something in there to help keep them warm, but we couldn’t find our extension cord. The chickens like to sleep up off the ground on a stick, so the mat probably wouldn’t work, but I think we should get a warming water bowl/dish. It is so weird when hair freezes, it’s all crunchy, but if I were going to have frozen hair, I’d rather it be while sitting in a hot tub 🙂 ! (Oh, Also, don’t forget to email me the song list!)
XN- I have always loved warm weather. I think Colorado is beautiful, but I love the tropics way more. When I was a kid (and still today), I loved that my birthday was in the summer because it meant warmth and fun, and apparently my house reflects that. I’ll have to keep my eye out when I am at other people’s houses to see “who they are” as well!
hi Cassie,
We have an absolutely weird list of songs (everything from Keely Smith and the Beatles to the Dixie Chicks and Beyonce’) and think they would be kind of strange together, so we would appreciate if you helped to update us with a CD of YOUR favorite tunes. You are probably a lot more aware of newer good stuff then us, especially with Britton being a musician. With your help, we can climb out of the 60’s (Larry) and 70′ s and 80’s (Annie). Our kids used to send us cool CD’s but now they are into working and kids (Dave and Stef) or gay girl stuff (Sheri and San), so we are looking to hear something new!
Thanks for thinking of us,
Love, Tia Anita
