We were watching a PBS show on the date palm. I hadn’t actually tried a date until after we watched this special. It is a very tall palm that apparently requires its ‘feet in the water and its head in the sun’. I wasn’t sure if Puerto Rico was too humid or not? Im thinking AZ would be much better suited.
They are native to the middle east.
As a result of watching this show I tried some dates….They are pretty good!
Funnily enough, I was just looking up a few “viveros” today and Vivero Anones (http://www.viveroanones.com/) does list Date Palms and Dwarf Date Palms for sale so they must grow here. I’m sure the folks at Las Marias could give you more info.
Thanks for the link! That is actually about 10 miles from where we are moving to. Sure enough “Palma de dátiles”.
I am going to put this place on our list of things to do/visit when we visit in Feb.
We have a date palm growing here at the rainforestinn — http://www.rainforestinn.com
The palm tree is not very big but we’ve been told it will never make dates because our 240 inches of rain a year is too much.
Do Mexican Fan Palms (Washingtonia robusta) grow in PR? How about Windmill Trachycarpus fortunei?
Well see. I scattered a few Trachycarpus Takil seeds in Aguada PR near the Pico de Piedras beach. Between the beach & “Olaja Bar & Grill”.
It was only a handful because I was not sure if USDA would confiscate the seeds Bound for Puerto Rico. But as it turns out USDA only checks items heading towards the US mainland and even though Puerto Rico is domestic United States soil baggage still checked for foreign plants that may threaten the US mainland forests with insects & blight deceases.
