Good news! Britton and I went to a Greeley Town Hall meeting last night and talked about our backyard hens situation. We seemed to have quite a favorable response and were told by the planning department that they would like to form a citizens’ committee to change the code and would like us to be on it. They did not seem to respond to our concerns about the fact that we still think we are being cited under the wrong code (development instead of animal), but anyhow, they also said we could keep our girls in the meantime.
So, I think this is a win-win situation (a win-win hen resolution, if you will) for everyone. We get to keep Henrietta, Omelette (Salt’s new name), Greenfoot and Football and we get to help others who may want to keep a few hens in their backyards as well. We also passed out our fact sheets and our value statement (they are also listed under pages on this site) to help educate about backyard hens.
Thats great! Nice work. Which reminds me I need to pick up 50#’s of corn tonight on the way home. It costs about $18. Is that what you pay?
Hey Jeff, Thanks!
I am not sure what corn goes for by the pound because it is sold here by the ear. It can range anywhere from 3-8 ears for a dollar depending on the season and the crop. How many ears do you get with 50 lbs?
A 50# bag of corn is like a 50# bag of cat food. It would be a lot of ears of corn!
Are you talking about chicken feed/scratch? I thought you were talking sweet corn for human consumption. I think we buy a 25 lb bag of chicken scratch for about $10 so that sounds pretty close. I didn’t know you guys had chickens.
Hooray! Way to go with the hens! I’m happy for you guys!
We dont! But we have to feed all the “wild jungle fowl” that wander into the yard! Before we put up some chainlink fence we would have over 40 chickens wander in. Now were down to only a dozen or so.
The chicken corn I bought last night was about $10 for 50#’s! I cant believe how cheap the corn is.
